Ectoparasites especially ticks remain the number one reason for presenting your pet to the Veterinarian.
These parasites on their own cause itching, itchy rash, dermititis and discomfort. They feed on the blood and transmit disease like tick fever, lime diseases and babesiosis and death in severe infestation.
Humans are not a preferred host but it is not uncommon to find some in the armpit, at the back, groin and some other hard to reach region. They sometimes are found in cracks and walls in heavily infested homes.
Several treatment options are available namely, spray, powder, injection as well as chemical bath. The option to choose from depends on both the age of the pet and the level of infestation.
Visit us at Elimsa Veterinary to know what options will work best for you.

Let's give you a quick one today as we go to the 10th human medication poisonous to our pets

10. Beta-blockers (e.g. Tenormin, Toprol, Coreg)
Beta-blockers are also used to treat high blood pressure but, unlike the ACE inhibitor, small ingestions of these drugs may cause serious poisoning in pets. Overdoses can cause life-threatening decreases in blood pressure and a very slow heart rate.

Don't forget that In Elimsa Veterinary Clinic, your Pet's health is our priority.

Good afternoon dear reader, today we will be considering the 9th human medication which can be dangerous to our pets.
9. ACE Inhibitors, I know it looks complex but no, ACE means
Angiotensin-converting enzyme and the word "INHIBITORS" means something that inhibits or stops the action of another. So ACE Inhibitors are drugs that inhibits the action of this enzyme called the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme(ACE).
Examples are Zestril & Altace.
These medications are commonly used to treat high blood pressure in people and, occasionally, pets. Though overdoses can cause low blood pressure, dizziness and weakness, this category of medication is typically quite safe. Pets ingesting small amounts of this medication can potentially be monitored at home, unless they have kidney failure or heart disease. All heart medications should be kept out of reach of pets.
That's all for now. Tomorrow we will update you with the 10th human medication that can harm our pets.
In Elimsa Veterinary Clinic, your Pet's health is our priority.

Greetings to you and yours, In our daily release of human medications that can be poisonous to our pets, We are now on number 7 on the list.
7. THYROID MEDICATIONS
Pets — especially dogs —have naturally underactive thyroid glands and luckily they need higher doses than humans so rarely comes to overdose. Interestingly, the dose of thyroid hormone needed to treat dogs is much higher than a person’s dose. Therefore, if dogs accidentally get into thyroid hormones at home, it rarely results in problems. However, large acute overdoses in cats and dogs can cause muscle tremors, nervousness, panting, a rapid heart rate and aggression.

Please Note that a number of factors (amount of substance ingested, size of the animal, allergies, etc.) determine what is toxic to a particular pet. When in doubt contact a veterinarian to see if your dog or cat ingested a toxic, poisonous amount.

Today we will be discussing the 6th human medication that is poisonous to our pets.
6. ALBUTEROL: Millions of people in the World suffer from asthma. Many of these people have inhalers to use during an attack. These inhalers are composed of a small pressurized canister that contains a solution of asthma medicine fitted into a plastic casing that releases a precise dose of the medicine in an aerosol form. The medicine contained in many asthma inhalers is Albuterol, a drug used to relax the muscles in the lungs and allow the air passages to open.

The size and (we think) the smell of the inhalers make them very attractive and interesting to our dogs. Dogs are easily able to puncture the canister if they chew on it. Since the canister is pressurized, the entire contents are released instantly, resulting in almost certain overdose of the medication. In an overdose, these drugs affect both the muscles of the lungs as well as the muscles of the heart. The results are immediate, severe, and include the following:

Increased heart rate
Abnormal heart rhythms
Red gums
Increased respiratory rate / excessive panting
Abnormal behavior (restlessness/agitation, hiding, tremors, shaking, lethargy, weakness, collapse)
Low or high blood pressure
Vomiting
Severe changes in blood electrolytes (particularly potassium)
Seizures
Shock
Acute death

If you know that your pet has bitten into an inhaler, you should seek care at the nearest emergency veterinary facility. Bring the inhaler and the original packaging if it is available, as well as any medications that your pet is currently taking. Do not induce vomiting at home.

Happy Sunday guys, the fifth human medication poisonous to our pets we will talk about today are a group of drug called
5. ADD/ADHD Medications. The meaning is Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What happens if my pet ingests ADHD medication?
just a small amount of an ADHD medication could cause problems for our four-legged friends.
ADHD medications are stimulants, and when dogs ingest stimulants you can see an increase in activity—such as pacing, walking in circles or unable to sit still—heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. In severe cases, these signs can become life-threatening.
When cats ingest stimulant ADHD drugs, they may also show an increase in activity, or they may sit unusually still and stare for long periods of time. Internally, they will have an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature, despite their lack of movement.

these medications often contain amphetamines and methylphenidate

Please you must note that even small doses in pets can cause life-threatening tremors, high body temp, seizures and some heart problems.

Remember to keep all ADHD medications out of paws’ reach, and if you believe your pet may have eaten an ADHD medication, please contact your veterinarian

Today we bring the fourth Human Medication which can be poisonous to pets
4. BENZODIAZEPINES
Benzodiazepines are a class of drug used mostly in humans to reduce anxiety and to help sleep, but in pets may have the opposite effect.
Agitation, but also lethargy and slow breathing may occur

In cats, even one pill of Alprazolam(Xanax) may cause liver failure

So instead of giving human medications to your pets, do well to visit a licenced Veterinarian and have your pet checked, the appropriate veterinary drug prescribed and followed as directed by the Veterinarian.

That's all for now, Stay tuned tomorrow as we discuss the 5th human medication that can be dangerous to our loving pets. Please kindly follow us on Instagram

Still on Medications that affect our dogs,
2. ACETAMINOPHEN AND OTHER COLD/FLU MEDICATIONS
even though is safe for children, it is not safe for pets, especially not for CATS
one tablet does irreversible damage to the red blood cells in cats thus limiting their ability to carry the oxygen
in dogs, leads to liver failure, and in very high doses to damage of the red blood cells

Is your pet healthy? How can you be sure?
Seeing is Not Always Believing
You can’t always tell how your pet feels by looking at them. While they may not show outward signs of disease or injury, problems could be developing that can only be detected by a trained professional.

Things like lethargy, loss of interest in certain activities, and changes in behavior can mask illness or infection.
Some internal illnesses won’t show outward signs until it’s too late. Yearly check-ups allow you to track your pet’s vital signs, so any problems can be treated before they get out of control.

We wanted to wish a happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, both human and animal fathers alike!
As a tribute to hardworking dads, we will talk about Dogs among all in the animal kingdom’s most dedicated dads. Weigh in on the comments section and tell us which species you think is the best father figure.
Even better, send this article to the fathers in your life, telling them which animal father he reminds you of the most!
Just like the puppies of domesticated dogs, African wild dog pups are extremely active and expend quite a few calories throughout the day. Since the pups are unable to eat solid foods until they are about ten weeks old, their father will swallow their food and then regurgitate the softer version for the pups to eat, making sure they get enough nourishment. Some parents will stop at nothing to make sure their kids have a square meal! This feeding practice serves another purpose, too—since the pups have to rely on their fathers for food, it keeps them from wandering too far from home, so they don’t fall prey to enemies.
