International One Health Day, Nov 3

One Health is an approach that recognises that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment.

The discussion on the radio programme, with Yemi Sonde on Splash 105.5FM, held on Tuesday, 2nd November 2021, was used to get stakeholders and other members of the public informed about some of the issues One Health Approach can help to solve : zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and food security, vector-borne diseases, environmental contamination, and other health threats shared by people, animals, and the environment.

Topic discussed:
One Health Approach: A Good Way to Minimise the Risk of Disease Outbreaks in Nigeria.

[In the picture L-R: Yemi Sonde(Programme Anchor); Dr.Tajudeen T. Tairu (Head of Department of Environmental Health Science, Lead City University, Ibadan); Dr Temidayo Bakare (Founder, Frontline Agro-Veterinary Services)]

Other guests on the programme:
Dr. Ifeoluwa Sangogade(Veterinarian & One Health Advocate)
Dr. Edward Olajide (Veterinarian & One Health Advocate)

Activities are ongoing in line with the One Health Strategic Plan (2019-2023) to institutionalise One Health Approach in Nigeria. Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is working together with the Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Federal Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders to achieve this.

*Health Affairs on YESMA Radio*
*Thursdays | 5PM-6PM*

Topic to be discussed on the 11th of February, 2021:

Poultry Health : Ways to Protect Poultry from Avian Influenza.

Guest:
Dr. Segun Makanjuola
______________________

" In 1997, a highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 avian influenza emerged in Southeast Asia and spread throughout numerous Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and European countries. It has also been associated with illness and death in humans who have had close contact with infected birds... The first avian influenza H5N1 case reported in Africa was in February 2006 in Nigeria." - World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)

With the recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) in Nigeria, affecting two backyard poultry farms and two commercial farms in Kano, Kano state, and another in Jos, Plateau state, how do we ensure that other poultry farms are protected from this disease and safeguard human health?

Please join the discussion.
