After having had a few weeks of fun at the forest and the beach Liv took Floyd to Abderry for the first time. Baby steps but he couldn't have been better - a star in the making I reckon 🤩

Following on from the previous post and whilst assessing the chances of her accepting her foal after 5 hours of walking the fence I noticed her pal foaling. All went perfectly and lucky for him his mum is amazing but 24 hours later it all turned pear-shaped and it was touch and go for a while. A massive thank you to Ingeborg and Alice and of course my hubby and Liv for working tirelessly to give him the best treatment. So lucky to have such a fantastic team. Having the zoomies firstly in the box and then in the paddock was a sight for sore eyes ❤️

Sometimes we have a week we'd rather not have and last week was one of those. It started at 2am on Tuesday when the mare took one look at her foal, jumped up and ran away snorting. I left them to it and watched them on the camera. She didn't go near him all night and I defrosted colostrum and fed him on an hourly schedule. It was heartbreaking. Being a rather quirky mare I had been told she'd either be a fab mum or the total opposite. Poor girl was very upset and we made the decision to not persevere as she wasn't willing to be handled by us either. Luckily we found a foster mum so at 12 hours old I drove him all the way to Matamata where a mare was delighted her foal who she'd not left in 3 days suddenly became alive again... They are both doing really well and luckily a silver lining to an awful situation.

Breeding your own horse is a process. The excitement of the first positive pregnancy scan and then the wait of 11+ months before what you hope is an easy foaling can feel very long.
On a nasty wet day, nearly 7 years ago, Liv pulled Connie out. We were lucky it went smoothly and all 4 feet hung on correctly.
Since then a lot of patient waiting, handling, long reining, breaking in (all done by Liv) has taken years.
Connie became a mum in the year Liv was in USA, because... why not!
Good times and not so good times, ups and downs, one great show to another not so great show!
Lucky we love these animals as it can be tough but there is something addictive about breeding.

Sporting a flash new clip, Floyd was feeling cheeky today 😜 we're wondering if it is because he needed a wee. Second time he's acted like that and needed one when he finished. Will definitely keep that in mind for next time

Floyd is feeling pretty good with all these frosty mornings lately…

Connie was very opinionated about having to wait for her breakfast on the cold mornings last week…

Floyd has come along way since Liv first tentatively sat on him on the 18th May. He's impressing us with his eagerness and quick learning. Seems to be enjoying himself too which is so important. Such a star 😍

Liv drawing on her equine science degree, nutrition and exercise physiology internship at KER and now her job as territory manager at Dunstan (and of course the years of hands on experience) to train her own. It's going to be exciting to follow their progress:

"After using heart rate monitors for the horses at Uni and KER, I bought myself one. They’re such a good tool to understand fitness and how the environment around them can influence their homeostasis. It can also give me an idea of how the horse could be feeling whether it’s a new injury that isn’t yet visible to the eye, or if the horse is a bit under the weather. I’m super excited to be using it on Connie and Floyd, though Connie isn’t a fan of me putting it on!"

After very sadly having to say goodbye to our dear Snoopy yesterday we needed to properly appreciate how lucky we are to have the ones we have today. Not sure I'd be keen to have my face so close to Connie but Liv is her person and they adore eachother 💗 and playful Floyd having fun with his ball managing to put a smile on our faces ❤️

My least favourite thing to do is weaning but now that we are 2 days into winter we really need to get a rug on Connie so yesterday was D-day. Both, understandably, were a little upset at the process. However, today Connie seems absolutely fine and enjoying being with Floyd. Lulu handling it pretty well too doing some leading work with Liv whilst Bonnie (the perfect paddock mate/auntie) gets lunged by Harriet. Lucky to be able to pair them up with great paddock mates so they aren't alone. Another great reason to have so many horses.... 🤣
