"WSAVA’S OPPOSING TO ONYCHECHTOMY, DEVOICING, TAIL DOCKING, EAR CROPPING AND OTHER COSMETIC SURGERIES"

We at South Metro Animal Clinic will not be performing any cosmetic surgeries as we support and advocate with WSAVA for the improvement of animals' welfare.

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has produced a Position Statement, expressing its opposition to the physical alteration of an animal’s body for cosmetic or behavioural-control reasons. It also calls on veterinary teams to educate their clients regarding the harm that these procedures can cause and counsel them as to how to improve their animals’ welfare and living conditions.

In 2019, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) published one of its most popular veterinary guidelines to date, the 2019 Canine Life Stage Guidelines! They were an update and extension of the 2012 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines. A noteworthy change from the earlier guidelines was the division of the dog’s lifespan into five stages (puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior, and end of life) instead of the previous six.

One of the most popular resources from the Canine Life Stage Guidelines, is this handy infographic answering one of the most searched questions by pet owners, "when should my dog be neutered or spayed?"
