Canine parvovirus is a single-stranded DNA virus from the Parvoviridae family. It has two primary variants that infect dogs: CPV-2a and CPV-2b. The virus primarily targets the rapidly dividing cells in the dog's body, such as the intestinal lining and bone marrow, causing severe damage to the immune system and gastrointestinal tract.

The symptoms of canine parvovirus can be severe and appear suddenly. The most common signs include:

-Severe and persistent diarrhea, often bloody
-Vomiting
-Loss of appetite
-Lethargy and weakness
-Fever
-Dehydration

Preventing CPV is the best course of action. The most effective preventive measure is vaccinating puppies and dogs regularly. Puppies should receive a series of vaccinations, starting at six to eight weeks of age and continuing every two to four weeks until they are around 16-20 weeks old. Adult dogs should receive regular booster shots to maintain immunity.
