Hi everyone. I apologize for disappearing after I said I would be posting photos of the oldest litter. How Long ago was that? Sigh
I got sick, then my oldest rabbit started deteriorating. I spent his last days spoiling him in between round the clock care of my other bunny who had been battling a bad respiratory infection for the last 2 months. Sadly, the day came that I had to make the hard, but kindest decision for my old man. Then, this past Saturday, my wonderful little guy lost his fight. I’m absolutely heart sick. It has taken me some days to adjust to all this time I suddenly have and the emptiness that has come with it. I don’t know what to do with it. Well, yesterday, I finally took pictures of the early December litter. I had to come up with a different back drop for the pictures since we got 18 inches of snow and the last 3 days had a high in the single digits. Myself and the ratties said heck no to doing photos outdoors! I think the photos turned out pretty cute. The kids are officially turning 8 weeks old this Thursday. My how time flies! They are so ready to have their own family. They all love hand wrestling and all come running to meet me when I open up the cage door. They’re nervous for maybe a minute or two when brought to a new environment, but quickly want to get out and explore. They all accept man handling, loud kissing noises and other weird sounds I make to see what they’ll do. It doesn’t phase them much. I have purposely kept interactions to the cage with the occasional outing to another room as I want to see what their true reactions will be to new things. They have all been on one road trip to the place I work where they were a bit nervous at first, but quickly opened up to saying hi to customers walking in. They also enjoyed treats and handled waiting in the car as I did a few quick errands. I have been really happy with their behavior and attitudes. I do have one boy who tends to want to hide and freeze in place when he’s put into new situations. However, he lets me handle him all I want and is relaxed in my hand. One boy tends to want to dart everywhere at first until he calms down. Everyone else is pretty easy going about whatever I introduce to them. I may hang onto the 2 more nervous type boys a bit longer to see how they develop unless one of my regular and well experienced buyers wants to take them on as a study for me. I have three girls. All 3 are super friendly, chill and very playful. I am still trying to decide if I will keep one. It turns out that despite dad being a pearl, only one of these kids is for sure a pearl. The rest of the mink based kids may be silvers instead of pearl. Silver is really new to me. It is a beautiful pattern. It’s pretty simple in that it is when a rat’s coat is evenly mixed with white hairs and whatever other color it’s base color is. In these rats’ case, that is mink. There may be one or 2 cinnamons that are also silver or possibly pearl. I found out after I took photos, how to tell on a baby coat. So, I will try to figure that out. The one pearl boy that I know is pearl is just really obvious. Several of the cinnamons are also Russian blue. If you haven’t seen a Russian cinnamon, they are really beautiful. The velveteen coated kids are not very strongly kinky/wavy, but they have a really nice texture to them. Overall, I’m very pleased with this first litter by Taisce. I will post photos once I get chores done, so very soon!
