Plastics are porous, meaning oils💧 become trapped in them. Unless they’re washed🧼 daily, which isn’t practical, the pet food stored inside will be spoiled by rancid oils.🩸Proper pet food storage is essential to blocking or delaying the development of degenerative chemical processes⚠️ and the growth of spoilage bacteria.

Study: Metal bowls have MORE dangerous bacteria⚠️ than plastic! 🤯

Pet food and water bowls can transmit bacteria, according to research, and while 67% of owners use metal bowls, only about 1/3 of people wash the bowl after a meal, and some only dry wipe, which is how the bacteria party gets started 🤢. And that slippery film in the water bowl after 24 hours? That’s a brew of bacteria🦠 that can be transferred from your dog to you and your family.

The amount of moisture in the food also matters. Wet food (compared to dry) was associated with higher bacteria - and higher humidity levels are likely to create perfect conditions for bacterial growth, especially after coming in contact with dog saliva left in the bowl.

In our new book, The Forever Dog LIFE, we lay out the pro’s and con’s of different types of bowls. Here’s a glimpse of what you need to know:

Plastic🥣: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, which can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis that leaves your pet’s nose & lips, pink and irritated.

Ceramic:🫖 Hartpury scientists found the most harmful bacterial species (salmonella, E.coli and MRSA) were most frequently found in ceramic bowls because of people continuing to use them after fine cracks in the glaze become visible.

Stainless steel🥄: cheaper quality bowls have been involved in recalls due to heavy metal contamination. Be sure to buy high-quality bowls (18/8 or 304 steel) from a trusted source.

Glass🥛: Durable, kitchen-friendly glass bowls made from 100% borosilicate glass (Pyrex) make great food and water bowls on the floor.

🧼No matter which type of bowl you use, the best thing you can do to protect you and your dog’s health is to wash your bowl after every meal with hot water and soap. In addition, at least once a week, run your bowls through the hot cycle in your dishwasher. You can also coat the bowl with hydrogen peroxide, wait five minutes, then wipe with a clean sponge and rinse.

For more info on bowls, Comment and we’ll message you the link to The Forever Dog LIFE book where in part one titled The Forever Kitchen and the section labelled “Food & Water Bowls", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🌱 that won’t leach contaminants⚠️ over time.

🥦 If you’re not preparing broccoli this way, you’re not helping to prevent cancer, according to science!🔬

If you want your dog (or cat!) to reap all of the longevity benefits inside this cruciferous veggie, how you prepare it makes a BIG difference.

Many people cut broccoli into florets or bite-size pieces, cook it, then serve it - to themselves and their pets. And yes, of course, there is a whole host of beneficial nutrients and fiber in broccoli prepared this way.

But with some small but very significant changes to the way you prepare broccoli, you can put a lot more of the powerhouse bioactive sulforaphane into the bowl, along with the fiber and nutrients.

Studies show that sulforaphane - found in high levels in broccoli - has potent anti-cancer effects. So if your dog or cat is fighting cancer, or if you’re proactively doing all you can to prevent it, adding sulforaphane is a smart move. In addition, sulforaphane can decrease inflammation, prevent type 2 diabetes, and detoxify heavy metals, mycotoxins, and Maillard reaction products (MRPs). These MRPs are often found in ultra-processed pet food, so you can substantially improve a bowl of kibble by adding broccoli.

💡Here’s the trick: you can dramatically increase the sulforaphane content with two simple kitchen hacks!

How it works: When you buy fresh broccoli (and the fresher, the better when it comes to sulforaphane), the sulforaphane hasn’t been “unlocked” yet. Instead, its precursor, glucoraphanin, is waiting to combine with an enzyme called myrosinase. Damaging broccoli cells (by chopping, grinding, chewing) activates the myrosinase so that it can convert glucoraphanin into sulforaphane.

🔪Step 1: Finely chop fresh broccoli and activate that myrosinase! (Researchers found that chopping broccoli into 2 mm pieces maximized the myrosinase activity). In a rush? Whiz it up in a food processor.

⏱Step 2: Let it rest. Studies also show that letting the chopped broccoli sit for 90 minutes or longer tripled the sulforaphane levels, compared to serving the broccoli right away.

🌱But what about frozen broccoli or broccoli sprouts? For even more hacks on what you can do with your broccoli…head over to the Forever Dog LIFE Learning Lab and watch our recent session. This FREE masterclass community group is available now if you have pre-ordered our upcoming second book, The Forever Dog LIFE. We're covering more hacks, tips and recipes from our new book! Walnuts for Pets? A-OK! 👌

Walnuts are said to be toxic to pets, but that’s actually false (only the leathery, outer husk should not be consumed by any mammal ❌)! Raw, unsalted, human-grade English walnuts offer many benefits to dogs 🐶 (and cats, if they’ll try ‘em 🐱), thanks to their phytochemicals and other nutrients 🌟. If you have fresh, raw, shelled walnuts, don’t hesitate to share them with your animal companion. 👍
