Biosecurity Tips for Horse Shows šŸ“šŸ”
Your horseā€™s health is the top priority during competitions. šŸ† However, mingling horses at showgrounds poses risks. While we canā€™t eliminate all disease threats, following core biosecurity principles significantly reduces the risk of introducing and spreading illnesses. Hereā€™s what you and competition management should focus on:
1. Limit Contact: Minimize horse interactions with other animals, humans, and shared equipment.
2. Clean and Disinfect: Regularly sanitize equipment to prevent disease transmission.
3. Isolate Sick Horses: If a horse shows signs of illness, promptly isolate and seek veterinary evaluation.
Isolation Before Competing:
ā€¢ Check Entry Requirements: Verify vaccination records and health declarations with event organizers.
ā€¢ Pre-Travel Health Check: Examine your horse daily and monitor their temperature for at least 3 days before departure. Any fever above 101.5Ā°F warrants caution.
ā€¢ Past Exposure: If your horse has been near infectious cases recently, consult a vet for evaluation and testing.
Remember, a healthy horse is a winning horse!

Performing routine preventative care is an important part of your horseā€™s wellbeing and care.

UPDATES GUIDELINES AVAILABLE šŸ“¢

The AAEP has issued revised Internal Parasite Control Guidelines to help minimize the risk of parasitic disease and maintain the effectiveness of current drugs for as long as possible by delaying further development of anthelmintic resistance.

The updated guidelines account for recent advances in knowledge concerning increased anthelmintic resistance and optimization of parasite control management practices. They also address common misconceptions and offer parasite control program recommendations for senior horses (over 15 years old), mature horses (between 5 and 15 years old), and young horses (under 5 years old).

Read more at: https://aaep.org/post/aaep-publishes-updated-internal-parasite-control-guidelines/

The guidelines were reviewed and updated by the AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines Task Force, chaired by Dr. Nielsen and comprised of 10 AAEP members predominantly board certified in veterinary internal medicine, veterinary parasitology and/or veterinary microbiology. We thank them for their incredibly important work!

Honoring Our Heroes: Memorial Day Tribute

On this solemn day, we pay tribute to the brave souls who have selflessly served our nation. Their sacrifices remind us of the true cost of freedom. Let us never forget the brave men and women who have paved a way for us.

šŸŽ Horses in the Line of Duty: Did you know that during the Civil War, three million horses and mules stood alongside soldiers? These noble creatures carried artillery, cavalry, and supplies, enduring hardships and danger. Approximately half of them lost their lives, serving with unwavering loyalty.

In Their Honor As we gather with loved ones today, letā€™s pause to honor those who gave their all. Whether on two legs or four, they embody the spirit of sacrifice.

Spring doesn't just mean vaccines. Before deworming in the spring, we recommend having a f***l egg count done. This procedure allows us to measure the number of worm eggs a horse is shedding in its f***s. Based on the results, we will recommend whether you need to deworm your horse.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Devita Wooten! We are pleased to have Dr. Wooten spend some time at our practice this spring to assist our team during our busiest time of the year. She will be available to schedule in April and will be at our practice a couple weeks each month this spring.

The Bronchoalveolar Lavage

Is your horse making respiratory noise when being worked? Are they not finishing the barrel pattern as they have previously? Are you noticing frequent coughing associated with eating or exercise? Does your horse have nasal discharge?

Often times our clients will come to us with the above concerns. When thinking about the respiratory tract, your veterinarian will try to assess whether the upper or lower airway is affected. This often requires an in-depth conversation between owner and veterinarian. All diseases causing coughing, nasal discharge, or poor performance are worth further work-up.

If your veterinarian suspects lower airway disease in your horse, a bronchoalveolar lavage, or BAL, may be recommended.

During a BAL procedure, a flexible tube is passed through the nose and down into the trachea. A small quantity of sterile saline will be passed through this tube down into the lower airway at the interface where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged (the alveoli), and then aspirated back. This part of the procedure requires sedation and restraint, but is relatively fast.

We gain very important information from the fluid characteristics including color, consistency, and the amount of debris present. A consulting laboratory performs further testing, observing which cells from the immune system are present. Based on the ratio of the cells and how they deviate from normal values, lower airway disease in the horse can be diagnosed.

Your veterinarian will be able to make very specific recommendations based on the results of the BAL.

Please call our office at 319-366-6441 with further questions or to speak with a veterinarian today.

REMINDER: A sudden change in diet when spring arrives can increase the risk of digestive health problems and laminitis. In the spring, grass can accumulate high amounts of hydrolyzable carbohydrates (HC) that might be unsafe for certain horses to consume.

Have questions about how to best transition your horses to spring pastures? Give us a call at 319-366-6441.

UPDATE!

Sunday, we posted here looking for a nurse mare. Thank you to everyone that shared our post, messaged us and called. The equine community is truly amazing.

Sunday afternoon we were connected with Cloud, a wonderful nurse mare, and today we are happy to provide an update. The process of acclimating nurse mares with foals takes time and dedication, but we are happy to say that this pair is doing very well. The foal has learned to nurse and is thriving. It is heartwarming to see this pair bonded and doing so well together. Weā€™ve included a short video clip of the two in the comments section.

Foaling season is here! This filly presented at 36 hours old for failure to nurse and stand after being normal the day before. She was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy or ā€œdummy foal syndromeā€ after examination. In general foals need to nurse every 2 hours as a minimum. When they are recumbent they require a tremendous amount of nursing care and adequate feedings. An IV catheter and feeding tube was placed in order to provide adequate nutrition, fluid support, and systemic antibiotics to this filly. She received hyperimmune plasma due to low results of her IgG test and risk of sepsis. After 3 days she was able to stand again and began nursing well on day 5 thanks to the dedicated staff at our hospital.

In honor of Equine Dental Health Awareness Month, here are some fun facts that you may or may not have known about your horse's teeth. Did You Know?

- A horse's teeth take up more space in their head than their brain.
- Geldings and stallions have between 36 and 44 permanent teeth, while adult mares have 36 to 40.
- Foals have 24 baby teeth, called 'caps', which they lose by the age of 5
- Horses teeth constantly erupt throughout their lifetime, which is why floating their teeth is essential!
