At Retz Petz Canine Training — Hope and I had a discussion this morning about leaving her toys everywhere. So she agreed to do some training with me 🙂

We’re watching YouTube videos of another KPA CTP so we can learn together:)

Stay tuned for progress 😂

In multi-dog households where one of the dogs resource guards toys from the other, it’s important to have proper management in place so that both dogs still get enrichment. We rotate in our house so that each dog is allowed to play safely with plush toys.

Are you prepared if your dogs get into a fight/disagreement to help de-escalate after? It's important to have a solid chain of behaviors that your dogs have under stimulus control and strong reinforcement history. I teach every new dog who enters our house (foster or new family member) the same cues. And we practice every single day. We make it a game with lots of treats. The cue in our house is "work out"....simply because I do the exercises with them every morning before I work out :) They love "work out"!

Hopefully, you won't have a fight. But in the event you do, it's important to have a plan to bring the stress down between the dogs. It's also important to NOT remove the object that is being fought over until the dog who took it has relinquished it. You don't want them to UP the escalation next time.

In this video, the two dogs involved in the fight had lived together for over a year. Both were my rescue dogs. The one dog was in the process of transitioning anti-anxiety medications. Historically he had allowed the other dogs to take toys from him. On this day, he decided he wasn't going to allow it. We were lucky that it didn't escalate. After the dog who gained possession of the toy laid it down, we picked up the toy, worked our chain of cues and separated the dogs for awhile. All interactions were supervised after this point.

The video in the link is >3 minutes, but it's meant to show how quickly things can change in real life. These are my dogs and we are careful with toys, etc. But you have to be prepared if it does happen.

With the cold weather today, I’m working with Duke, Rocky and Raymond indoors. They still get the physical and mental stimulation they need.

Raymond: build balance and strength in his rear legs. We’re just beginning to build this out so I used a known cue, “touch” to get him on the Bosu

https://youtu.be/_SgCU1E-Oco

Duke: build strength in his rear by placing two front legs on step. This is new to him as well so we’re still shaping it. Duke is very experienced with shaping exercises and quickly catches on. The crying in the background is Raymond who is gated in the other room and wants in on the fun.

Rocky: Rocky is 13 and starting to get weaker in his back end. We started shaping “back” about six months ago. He loves clicker training and views the “back” cue as a fun game. Added bonus, it helps with his rear end strength. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Don’t tell Rocky that ;) Important callout - take your dog's physical condition into account. I don't ask Rocky to do this cue on slippery surfaces like hardwood and I don't ask him to do a lot of sit/stands.

Muzzle training can be used in many different situations; not just aggressive dogs (obsessively eating things that could be harmful, nervous at groomers or vets, or not comfortable around people or other dogs). This is a great video that shows you how to muzzle train your dog so that they are part of the process and view it as a game.

A video guide to created to assist you in teaching your dog to enjoy wearing a muzzle.

This venture has been years in the making. I grew up with animals but it wasn’t until I adopted my first rescue dog that I became interested in animal behavior. Charlie was a very fearful dog and training methods I’d used before didn’t work with him.
I felt like I was failing at training. The rescue I adopted him from connected me with a positive reinforcement based trainer who helped me find solutions that worked for both of us. She showed me how I could take into account my dog’s skills and abilities - and how to make him part of the process. Working together, engaged and enjoying the process. This started the journey for me - to Retz Petz.
