Being locked in can inflict psychological damage.

It’s about power dynamics, and more importantly, it’s about how to dismantle these dynamics.

It’s about people who view the world through the simple, and all-consuming lens of the oppressed and the oppressor, the victim and the victimizer—and their goal is to be the savior, the righter of wrongs.

Dogs just happen to be the branch on the tree of this social justice focus.

Which is why you see seemingly bizarre proclamations about “decolonizing dogs”, “capitalist values and dog training”, “toxic masculinity in dog training”, and constant word choices like “agency”, “choice”, “empathy”, “permission” etc.

It’s why words like “ownership” and “commands” are frowned on. It’s why “obedience” and “leadership” are as well. It also why any tools which can create more of a power advantage for the human to compel desired behavior are verboten.

None of this is a coincidence. Everything is about power dynamics and how to dismantle them so the saviors can feel righteous and virtuous—and you’re supposed to believe that somehow in this vacuum of direction, our dogs will be happier, safer, better off.

Of course, this means that whatever “training” methods and tools that will be used will have to somehow fit within a framework that is completely devoid of anything which might smack of a human having power over a dog. Which is precisely why it’s so ineffective.

Because it goes against a necessary reality. You SHOULD have power over your dog—unless you believe your dog, with the intellectual capacity of a 2 or 3 year old child should have equal decision making ability and have an overall equal power in your relationship.

And I can promise that if having/exercising power over your dog makes you uncomfortable, you’re in for a very bumpy ride. If leading your dog, enforcing rules, and using tools which empower you challenge your moral compass, I’m afraid you’d best get used to a highly dysfunctional relationship and all which that brings with it.

Your dog is amazing, special, and wondrous, but he or she is absolutely not your equal, and to approach them in this fashion promises them and yourself much struggle, stress, and likely a very small world.

Power, when viewed as only a tool to victimize, creates a world where the abandonment of our most difficult responsibilities are celebrated as feats of virtue. Thing is, power, when used with love and care, has the ability to create true harmony, safety, and well-being…not just the superficial appearance of it.

PS, for all those melting down about the invocation of the phrase “social justice” in a critical fashion, let me be clear. This post, and my personal worldview is anything but anti-social-justice—what I am against is its vapid overuse which has undermined much of its actual gravity; the strategic leveraging of the term to use as a cudgel to beat anyone with differing opinions into submission; and the granting of unearned virtue, status, and attention to those who would rather comfortably scream about pseudo-moral “issues” to deflect the far more demanding and uncomfortable work of tackling the issues in their own lives.

While this should be obvious, it’s unfortunately anything but.

Owners, before you spend your money, please be aware of how the training process works. You’re paying us to lay a foundation and to then train you how to build on it and maintain it.

Dogs will happily “forget” all they know if not held to the standard of “remembering” by those they live with daily.

“Fixes” may look impressive initially, but they fall apart all too quickly if the trainer they learned from isn’t replaced by the trainer they live with.

Building calm behaviors even with my shenanigans

After a week of building rapport, Cuddles is beginning to respond to training…

01/18/2023

This is the tale of a standard, common, slip chain training collar, like the one in the picture.

I hear a lot of bu****it about how these collars are harmful, that they "choke" dogs, are cruel, yada yada yada.

To be honest, I have never seen an appropriately applied tool hurt anything, but I imagine in the wrong hands, a toothpick could render damage.

Anyway.

Daily, owners lose dogs that pull out of their collars because their owners only have them on those loosely fitting, fashionable but useless, 'quick release' collars.

Years ago, we had an incident where a client came to pick up their dog and it slipped it's collar.

Thankfully, he liked me. Thankfully he responds to commands sufficiently to return to me where I collared him up and handed him back to his owner on something he couldn't escape from.

Thankfully.

The next time you, or someone you know starts mouthing off about "choke" collars, "pinch" collars and "shock" collars, bear in mind that there is more evidence that they help dogs than there is of them hurting dogs.

The identities have been disguised to protect the parties.

We all deserve the benefit of learning from our mistakes.

You either love Huskies or you hate them, there is no in between. Josie was a great student, we played crate games, worked on engagement, and by the end of her stay she could potty on command in under 90 seconds.

Small dogs can do whatever big dogs can. Training is not something you do to your dog, it’s something you do for and with your dog.
Patrica and Sam now have the knowledge and tools to enjoy Diego the way they should. Even building him his own ramp!

Building is incremental as the information isn’t always clear for them to understand. For Louie the “rump-shaker”, I used the box to help with his positioning.

I told these 4 mini miscreants to pick on someone their own size! Two of them are supposed to be aggressive… 🤔 I think not! Reactive maybe but definitely not aggressive. A reactive dog is not an aggressive dog!
