Hooch the Miracle Pit Bull and Pals

Hooch the Miracle Pit Bull and Pals Although I (Mirra, his Gramma) was a Paw Parent from the time I was born until in my 40’s, H***h was my first dog after a 15 year hiatus.

H***h survived almost 15 years after being chained to a concrete block as a puppy, being thrown 40’ in a car crash fatal for his 2 owners, a normally terminal heart condition, and eventually, 3 spleen tumors. He did not come to me by my own choice, but I inherited a PitBull overnight upon my son’s death. He did, however, change my life in innumerable ways, one of which was to inspire me to become

a volunteer for Florida Rescue groups, and a Foster for 9 dogs and 8 cats (as of 2021). Having Pals around him in his last few years brought him (and me) lots of joy. Besides surviving so many challenges, H***h was also special because he belonged to EVERYONE. He was an ambassador for his breed everywhere he went. He never met a stranger, LOVED all people-especially kids-and never forgot any of the hundreds of friends he made, human or fur, no matter how many years it had been. His breed was not common in the year 2000 in Missouri when he was a pup. On streets and trails people always stopped to rub him first and often gasped in shock to find out what kind of dog he was while getting their faces covered in kisses. He did not discriminate nor did he allow any of his walkers to do so. He faithfully greeted all the people he met; old and young, the skaters, the homeless, the rappers, the differently-abled, the postman, those with strange hats or smells-even the wretched alcoholic with the hook that was always alone-until H***h came walking by. At the dog parks, he ran in between dog fights to break them up and made them run after him to play instead. He taught many a young boy dog how to behave, and despite being neutered, was always a fool for the Ladies, treating them with the utmost respect. A perfectly-behaved house and hotel guest, he traveled most of the Southeastern USA, although often an outlaw due to Breed Specific Legislation. In his last year, his foster sisters and brothers helped keep his spirits up. At almost 15, mostly blind, deaf, and crippled, he finally let go and died a peaceful, natural death at home in Florida on 4/28/2015, in his Gramma's arms. About an hour after his death, the picture of him with his teen-age dad, who died when H***h was only 6 months old, slid out of the frame on the wall over his bed, and landed beside him. May his miracles continue!

An interesting twist to the story of ~ He has a new potential mate!! You just never know when that right one will come along, even for an old one-legged man! 😉
This season’s nesting pair have flown the coop; not seen for a week now. One of the young females stayed behind with Lefty! She began hanging with him before that left, tho.
Lady went with them! She had been nursemaid for the goslings, and had flocked with the family most of the last month. Perhaps she is pairing up with one of them ??

Lefty has begun mingling with the rest of the gaggle. Perhaps the young are big enough that he doesn’t present a threat to them anymore, because the other gander isn’t chasing him away? Lady has been busy playing nursemaid to the goslings but is hanging near Lefty again. It’s pretty amazing that all the little ones survived!

Sweet boy Lefty coming for food! The goslings are difficult to distinquish from the parents, now. (Look for the white “butt ruffle” on the adults) Lefty is enjoying access to the pond now that the water level is high enough for him to get in and out.

The goslings are looking more and more like the parents! All 6 are doing well. Lefty the Lame Goose has continued to lose more feathers, but mostly on his right. This is affecting his balance, being on the same side as his missing leg. Lady has his back, tho, and tries to guard him.

Lefty is still losing feathers from his attempted migration. Some is expected from moulting, but much of his right wing is missing. He must’ve taken a beating from the other male stragglers or perhaps he wore himself out. Lady is protective of him, when he allows her to be near.

These goslings were welcomed by adoptive parents, but the rest of the flock clustering around was a bit intimidating! The wise instincts to scuttle them away avoided any potential dangers, yet provided an immediate bonding experience for the new family. ❣️

5/24/24: Two weeks since last seeing Lefty, but he was back last night and worse for the wear. His wing and tail feathers are tattered, but after I sat down beside him for several minutes he stood up and was on lookout (for me?). 😍
This morning Lefty was fine again, but the rest of his little gaggle were back, Lady and the pair with their goslings. I’m happy to see all 6 have made it across however many streets they cross on their journeys. 🙏🏽

5/15/24 am: Lady has returned as well as the family. Still no Lefty. How ironic that I spent all season coaxing her to stay here and now where the heck is he?
pm: now they’re all gone!

The weirdest thing to me is that every religion in the world believes in an afterlife, and yet we question it when we are surrounded by it!
Yes, you are hearing them smelling them ~ whatever and however they hold energetic space with you; not just cardinals or pennies.
Gardening for my grandmother. Driving with my daddy. Kitties making treat noises. Dogs nudging me. Grocery shopping with my teen DIL. She helps me find the hidden cans, like she did here. 😎
Yes, they are hovering at times! Please don’t ignore them. (remember, they have others to hover over besides you 😏)

4/23/24 Some trouble this morning~a gaggle of stray ganders has invaded our pond, causing a ruckus. It’s late in the mating season so perhaps looking to find a mate, and with Lady if Lefty ain’t doin it. I herded them away from their end of the pond, as the chicks/parents were quite on guard. More disturbing tho is the nesting pair are both honking loudly from the roof, leaving the nest unattended. No sign of eggs or new chicks! 🐣 😬
