#mezzacello last week my bioengineering teams worked on monitoring, collecting chemical data, diagnosing ich, researching it, treating it and saving the koi. Another team built a 1/18th scale Biodome by 3D printing junctions and using straws to connect them to keep baby bunnies safe over grass they could munch on. The third team built this mobile data lab to use to document everything. I was pretty impressed with how committed they were. #appliedSTEM #SUSTAINABILITY #summercamp #urbanfarm PS they used the 50” monitor and computer to plug the underwater camera into and the PC on board to research ich. They set up the 3D printer and powered it up and used blender to create the junctions for the Biodome and then print them. And they documented and filmed everything with onboard cameras and logged their data into a cloud-based Airtable database. The age range was 9-13 years old. I am pretty proud of them.
#Mezzacello my summer camp interns rigged a hose to the arches in the allee so the kids in camp could walk through and cool off after playing in the front gardens. This is day 2 of days of joy that I was challenged to capture by Eaves Acres
#mezzacello #automation #stem #urbanfarming the #summer #camp season is off to a bang! The kids in #biotechnology programmed an #arduino chipset to serve as a water valve control and a #timer to deliver water to all four quadrants of the #potager garden on a timed system! The pulled #rainwater from the bioreactor and allowed power to go to the water pump while each each 18K (3 minute) routine cycled through! And they got to run through it on a hot day! #ilovemyjob #sustainability #renewables #fun

2024 Biodome Retool from Greenhouse to animal care facility
One of my Middle School BioEngineering interns and I were trying to figure out how to add a gate to the Biodome at @Mezzacello Urban Farm. Samuel used the principles of biomimicry to fasten the gate at three points (two hinges one side, top and bottom and one hinge at the top to the left. This creates a flexible door that extends and stretches, but still opens and closes - and locks easily! It’s impressive!
#Mezzacello #spring is in full force here at @Mezzacello Urban Farm. So Much water! My fish, my plants, my gardens, and my ducks Love it! Luckily I am safe, warm, and dry in my 1868 farmhouse! #Sustainability #urbanfarm #UrbanFarming
#Mezzacello Columbus Zoo and Aquarium gifted me 10 cubic tons of #zoobrew yay me! Now I have to move it… but I have collected hundreds of #redwrigglers so far! Life finds a way. #sustainability #urbanfarm #urbanfarming #renewables #spring #springiscoming
#Mezzacello I am building out a unit on the role of #Pressure on the Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Phosphorus, and Water Cycles. Using a vacuum canner to demonstrate how these atoms (and one ESSENTIAL molecule) are influenced by different pressure differentials within an ecosystem. It’s crazy what you can dream about when you think of #sustainability #appliedstem and #Fun
#mezzacello it’s deep #winterand the #ducksofinstagram have discovered the air bubbler hole in the 5cm thick ice. Nature Finds a Way. #urbanFarm #sustainability #winter #water
#mezzacello #fresh #water a friend pointed out today that all my content is from Summer. So here’s a post from January 18, 2024. Yes my pond is frozen but the bubbler keeps liquid water available at all times. This is what I used to water the animals when I run out of water in my heated IBC. #sustainability #urbanfarm #urbanfarming #summercamps PS I still have water in my IBC tank, and the solar array and wind turbines charge the batteries to heat the water. I just wanted an excuse to walk on the ice. #littleboy
#mezzacello we have been building out infrastructure for hosting after hour events at Mezzacello. Tonight was our inaugural event. A group of Girl Scouts joined up with us to learn the basics of batteries, solar panels, wind energy and electricity. It was a blast and I KNOW for a fact they loved this 90 minute workshop! #appliedSTEM #UrbanFarm #Fun #sustainability #workshops #renewable #energy PS every light here is run from either onboard batteries and solar panels or from our solar/wind charged battery arrays. #superproud
#mezzacello I have been trying to save cardboard for use in the gardens has carbon but I discovered they were rats so we’re doing Carbon Harvesting today. Ash is better than rats
#mezzacello integrating #water on my garden structures to water my #potager gardens. Next up, all steel fencing so I can use fire to control weeds. The earth and the air are represented as well. The #bioreactor creates pure water and fertilizer/compost on demand and the wind turbines power everything. #sustainability #renewables #appliedSTEM #urbanfarming
#mezzacello many people are dubious when I tell them that 30% of my renewable energy at my #urbanFarm comes from what I call #trafficWind. Here you clearly see that wind is NOT moving the heavier “flower turbines” or the branches of any trees. But the #VAWT systems are all turning in response to rush hour traffic and a #COTA bus or two. #sustainability #renewables I think I need to replace the two flowers on the #bioreactor with these more efficient Vertical AxisWind Turbines. What do you think?

#Mezzacello we were honored to host the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens #WomensBoard to Mezzacello Urban Farm on Wednesday. My #Summercamp kids gave an #Amazing tour of the farm and showed#Fearless #leadership and a desire to connect. Thanks to Columbus ParksandRecreation for the grant that is funding my camps this summer. As a gift, the kids immortalized my #Equation for #Sustainability on an #UrbanFarm #AppliedSTEM for the win!
#mezzacello you may ask yourself what does busies, biology, trigonometry, and ecology have to do with farming and sustainable energy? Once they had the angle theta they wanted they simply adapted the angle for the desired radius as a hypotenuse. #appliedSTEM #sustainability #urbanfarm
