Sadly we must bid farewell to our sweet boy Bruno. We hatched him in our classroom, hand-raised him and loved on him as he grew into a fine young, well-behaved gentleman. Before Bruno we lost between 5-9 hens to predators every winter. Since he came into our lives we haven't lost a single hen to hawks or racoons. It has always been our motto, when raising chickens, "if you crow, you go." We had hoped that he wouldn't be a disturbance, but we recently received a complaint. We love our neighbors dearly. They are so supportive and friendly. We will honor the request and find him a good forever home. ❤️

Just another day with Urban Farm helping the Willamette Valley stay healthy. Thank you Mary's River Watershed Council for teaching us about invasive trees and allowing us to do some of the tree cutting. We love working with you! https://www.facebook.com/MarysRiverWC?mibextid=ZbWKwL

Have you ever wanted to attract blue birds to nest in your backyard, but swallows drove them away? We have discovered a solution and want to share our findings. Pair two bird houses back to back and enemies become neighbors! It's working so well on our farm that we will add two more sets this season!

Hello, Corvallis Community!

We are in need of desperate help… we have too many eggs!!! As usual, we’ll be selling one dozen eggs for $5 (cash only). Come swing by our extended egg stand tomorrow, Friday, April 14th, from 1-2:45pm at 33rd & Tyler and help us dwindle our supply. We appreciate any support you may provide to us! Look for our farm stand tent 🐓

In other news, our new ducks have been laying some eggs as well! Although we are not selling duck eggs, our students got to taste test the difference between scrambled chicken and duck eggs. Fun and new experiences were had!

That’s all for now. We hope to see you tomorrow afternoon 🤗

03/22/2023

Our most recent class project was building miniature landscapes! All students were given the same materials and the opportunity to collect moss from a small field trip. Each student had their own vision… and WOW!! 😱🤩 The results were beautiful and creative.

We are so thankful for our on-site Horticultural Therapist for guiding our class through inspiring activities like this, especially on our rainy days! The sun is coming out now… we’re super excited to get back outside and start working in the dirt again❤️

In partnership with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, we have committed to raising and have received about 900 Trout eggs!

Last week, we cleaned our two fish tanks in preparation for the arrival of eggs and completed water quality testing for both of our tanks. We are so excited to take care of these eggs (and soon fish!) for the next few weeks before we release them in the community.

That’s a wrap!! This week we released the last of our 1,000 Salmon that we’ve been raising since late October. Not only did teach and learn about the importance and life cycle of Salmon, we also witnessed it in our own classroom! Along with this, our students periodically checked the water quality of our Salmon tanks and at our release station, the Irish Bend on Oak Creek, leading up to the release dates.

We are thankful for our partnership with the Oregon Dpeartment of Fish and Wildlife and the support we provided towards endangered Salmon ❤️

Good morning from the farm! 😍 We are back from break and are in full swing. With all our canopies collapsed from strong winds, one of our first priorities was making sure that was addressed and our chickens had safe shelter. We also received FOUR new chickens… thank you to an anonymous donor? 👀

We are so excited to get back to work and resume our awesome projects from December! Stay tuned for more this week 👏🏼

Today we are examining our ecosphere creations!

After learning from an ecosphere architect, we scavenged for rocks, soil, moss, and insects to include in our jars. Each student (and staff) has their own micro-environment which we’ll keep a close eye on and attempt to reach and sustain homeostasis for. Some of us even have statue gnomes and turtles, too!

Today we learned about and engaged with Mason Bees alongside our community partner and expert, George! We brought in our “Mason Bee Motel,” opened up some cocoons, and welcomed these pollinators to life.

Our students had fun playing “parents” for the hour as well as taking a close look at the insects with our Chromebook-compatible microscopes. What a great hands-on learning experience!

Halloween - Urban Farm Style!! 🎃

Yesterday we taught Salmon Biology, Riparian Ecology, Water Quality, and Aquatic Macro-Invertebrates to 5th grade students at Clemens Park in Alsea. This work is part of our annual “Salmon Watch” partnership involving both Urban Farm students and College Hill Environmentorship students. We are so grateful for the multiple opportunities we have to work with local elementary students throughout this season and to serve as educational role models!
