A quick update with Kahu equine and an introduction post!
Firstly I’d like to start off with introducing this beautiful gelding Apache!
Apache is my Sister in law’s friends horse! She moved her horse down to the same bording facility I was at and needed help with her gelding!
I took them on as clients and started the journey to help them become an amazing team!
Apache desperately needed to build confidence especially understaddle and away from his buddie Fiona.
When I first started working with Apache on the ground he showed me he had so much try and just wanted to please. He tried his hardest to learn and understand what I was asking.
After some ground work I could tell he was ready for the next step which was saddling and riding.
Apache definitely tried to test me to see what’s what! But we only had a couple small bucks until he realized we where having fun and learning which he really loved!
Apache can now lunge both ways, is solid undersaddle walk, trot, canter, woah, turn both ways, back, and learned how to do amazing flying lead changes, he has amazing voice cues (walk,trot,canter,woah,backup) both undersaddle and on the ground. He also is solid in hand. This gelding has the potential to go in any direction!
His human is very pleased with what I’ve done so far and has been able to ride him without worry! Please always keep in mind it’s totally okay to ask for help when needed!
Apache is definitely one heck of a horse and I’m excited to see his human and him continue their journey together! I’m very greatful I was able to help them build an understanding of eachother and their needs! They will be a great team!

Teaching your horse Algebra before geometry with Kahu Equine.
Weird topic huh?

I just discussed this with a client of mine!
In school you’ll learn the fundamentals of algebra before you can learn geometry. It’s basic math, if you don’t have algebra skills you cannot learn geometry correctly! It’ll just be confusing and frustrating right?
Well the same goes for horses. You cannot properly teach a horse under saddle without having the proper groundwork fundamentals. Even if your horse allows you to get on its back it’s still not learning the fundamentals on the ground so everything in the saddle will be confusing and frustrating, just like trying to learn geometry before you learn algebra!
Everything you can teach in the saddle can be taught on the ground first so it’s less confusing for your horse once you get into the saddle. That’ll make for a happy horse instead of a frustrated horse.
So let’s teach our horses algebra (ground work) before we expect them to learn and understand geometry (in saddle)!

Building an understanding with Kahu Equine.

Training with an understanding of how your individual horses brain works can be one of the best and most rewarding things. We need to understand horses aren’t machines and they have emotions and opinions too! Each horse works and thinks differently so training one horse one way might not work out for another horse. you’ll need to have the knowledge to switch up and try something different if that horse isn’t understanding.
Having a good composure around your horses is so important even when they frustrate you! Staying calm and collected and even talking gently to them will help them understand that they can be calm, collected, and gentle too even in high stress moments. Staying calm will help your horse stay calm. If you get frustrated? Take a break give them a nice big pet, take a big deep breath, and try again later! There’s no need to yell, scream, smack, hit etc! That only creates horses that don’t trust, are shy, or even aggressive!
Remember whatever energy you put in will be reciprocated by your horse. That being said we also need to remember that you and your horse are a team! So giving them 100% means they will give you 100%, you can’t expect a relationship to work if you are only giving 10% and expecting 100%. That doesn’t just go for riding etc! That goes for their trust and care too, putting in that effort for your horse makes your horse wanna give you their effort too! If you are only giving your horse 10% why should they give you 100%?

Talon: A beautiful Arabian/thoroughbred cross.
Talon is in his twenties but don’t let his age define him! He is healthy and has a lot of life left in him! Talon is looking for his new person. He will need an advanced rider/owner as he is a lot of horse and has energy!
I’ve ridden talon a few times but most recently for his assessment! He is a huge sweetheart but hasn’t had a-lot done with him in a while so he needs a tune up. From what I know he has had a-lot of good training put into him but definitely needs a tune up. He has really great ground manners and like I said is a huge sweetheart. He does well out in the pasture with other horses. He has the potential to go in any direction wether that be trail riding to speed events! He’s a tall boy and could even do well jumping! Message me for more information and carrots! Please keep in mind I don’t know eveything about this boy. Located near Salem Oregon.

Breed: Reservation Mustang
Age:8
Gender: Mare
Brandy is an 8 year old reservation mustang off the Colville Rez. She was rescued from the corrals in November of 2021 by Michelle Keenly and her team. Michelle got Brandy healthy and taught her how to Lunge, tie, be okay with water, and to pick up her front feet.
Katie got Brandy in june of 2022 and continued to train her. Brandy is now Fully Broke to ride, picks up all four feet, loads in a trailer, has amazing ground work and is overall just an amazing little mare. Brandy's favorite thing is trail riding but shes done a bit of it all from English, cow sorting, barrel racing, jumping, and has done amazing tackless!
Brandy is cherished by her two forever humans Katie Ross and Jacob Magley.
With patience, an understanding, building a Partnership, and natural horsemanship Brandy went from a completely untouched feral Horse with a bad future ahead of her if she hadn't been rescued to a very loved, and amazing Partner for her human caretakers.
