Canticle Farm Texas Local, sustainable farm Welcome to Canticle Farm!
(9)

We are a family run farm and have a market garden, grow fresh flowers and herbs, and raise miniature Nubian dairy goats. We also have an ever growing line of handcrafted soaps, balms and lotions and other body products, many made with our goats milk. We practice sustainable agriculture to produce healthier, hardier livestock and some of the best veggies and fruit you've ever tasted.

We may get another pint or two of raspberries for jam this week, but the big news is, peaches are coming! We should have fresh, locally and sustainably grown peaches at the market this Saturday. The hot weather also means the chicks can safely come outside all day and enjoy the fresh air, watched over by Mom and Dad. These two didn't even hatch the eggs (we took care of that in the incubator) but they love to hang out around the chick pen and baby watch.

The peppers beat the tomatoes out of the gate this year. We will have quite a few at the McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square tomorrow. For the mild variety, look for Fushimi, Cubanelle, Shish*to and Poblano and for hots, Buena Mulata, Macedonian and White Lightning Bolt peppers. The Macedonian is a new variety we tried this year and it is doing great and tastes awesome. It has a hot, smoky taste and should make some great salsa. We are hoping to have a few tomatoes next week.

You've heard that everyone helps out on the farm? Well here, farm cat Spot, selflessly spends over an hour (until she was evicted) holding down the bouquet carrier while I cut and arrange flowers for the market tomorrow. What a team player!

It's the tag end of the spring floral show at the farm and we are enjoying the display. My Canterbury Bells finally bloomed (these take two years before you know what you're going to get) and we ended up with all shades of purple so far. The roses are in full swing and we should have a magnificent crop of hips this year and even my collection of scented geraniums are putting out delicate flowers as well as pleasant smells. The wildflowers, butterflies, and bees are busy and so are we-planting our summer seeds. Zinnias, celosia, strawflower, gomphrena are sprouting and okra, squash and cucumbers are up and going. Most of the gourd varieties have sprouted and the basil is getting a great start. Looking forward to summer veggies and enjoying the spring temps while we get them!

It's getting close!! The garlic scapes are starting to peek above the stalks of garlic. They are a little early, but with our overall mild winter, it is expected. The garlic crop looks fantastic this year and we hope to start harvesting by the end of May or early June. We will have some fresh heads at the market at that time but most of it will cure for a month or so to help it last. We will bring scapes to market probably within a month. Woohoo!

And for your entertainment today: here is Molly giving me the hoof when I, once again, pulled her and her babies out of the old outhouse where she is apparently determined to keep them. Why the outhouse? Especially when there is a spacious barn with clean straw bedding etc. Don't be overly concerned, there is no longer a pit, the back is open, no chance of them getting hurt, I just like to know everyone is in the barn at night, and have to keep moving her. She does have a great exasperated face though, right?!

I have seen much better pics of the eclipse than I took so I thought I'd share these. The light was so weird and directionless that it cast a unique look to our flowers. Our "Happy Trails" rose in particular was illuminated.

It's been a busy few days at the farm getting the last of our tomatoes and peppers planted, but we did have some new additions. Molly gave us a very colorfully wrapped set of twins: doeling and buckling, and Phoebe presented us with a sturdy buckling with lots of black spots. More pics coming as they begin to venture out of the barn and hit the popcorn stage!

Farm dogs are the best! Duke has had a busy week being baby Mona's climbing toy, watching chicken TV, and guarding his ladies. He's also disposed of or run off 3 raccoons that we've seen which is a huge help as our chicken flock has been decimated in the last several months by predators. Love those Pyrs!

Potting up raspberry starts today. The vigor of these June -bearing raspberry plants never fails to amaze me. Look at the root structure on these tip-rooted canes! If you are interested in growing some of these delicious beauties for yourself they will be available at the Canticle Farm booth at the Collin County Garden Show and in March at our booth at McKinney Farmer's Market at Chestnut Square. Bonus, there are lots of purported health benefits to raspberry leaf tea as well!

It's been a busy week at the farm. We are still trying new soap fragrances as well as building back up our soap supply and this week we unmolded Blackberry Magnolia, Gilded Amber, and Green Tea & Pear. The son has been helping out in his free time by cleaning the bushels of hard shell gourds we use to make bird feeders, houses, lamps and more. Look for these at the Collin County Garden Show as well as the McKinney Farmer's Market later this Spring. The daughter went to her last poultry show of the season and her hen brought home Junior Reserve Champion, a great way to finish! Look for a greenhouse tour coming soon as we are bursting with baby plants as well. See you at the market this weekend!

Beautiful days make for busy ones! The soap studio smells of spring with Honeysuckle, Rosemary Mint, and Red Currant & Thyme goats milk soap just poured in the molds. Outside I'm transplanting Turks Cap among other plants for the Collin County Garden show. If you haven't heard of Turk's Cap it's an excellent perennial for our area. Can grow in most areas, loved by hummingbirds, drought tolerant, edible fruit, and the list goes on. So thankful for the beautiful weather in the middle of winter!
