Pretty Shakira had a visit through CC to her vets at MacRae Park Animal Hospital in Des Moines for vaccines and Heartworm check. This is all in preparation for her cardiology appointment coming up next week at Iowa State University Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital. Shakira has a condition called VSD or ventral-septal defect. She is sporting a large hole in the center membrane of her heart that allows shunting of the blood back and forth between the ventricles. In Shakira’s case, this congenital defect is very severe and will ultimately limit her life.

We have been looking for surgical options for Shakira but due to the location of the defect and the size, so far our efforts have been unsuccessful. We will see if things have changed from Shakira’s last cardiology assessment in October at ISU. We never give up hope as new treatments and surgeries are always in the veterinary medical pipeline!

She is pictured here with her favorite vet, Dr. Jaden Knoebel! Shakira is from PAW Fort Madison Animal Shelter and is in foster care with Rhonda Walker of Des Moines.❤️🐾
