Why are horse’s teeth bigger when they are young? 🤔

Some of you may have noticed that when we perform dental extractions, the size of the teeth varies depending on the age of the patient. But… why?

The part of the tooth that we see when we open the mouth, called clinical crown, is just a small portion of it. This part may be similar size on an old horse and a young horse (case dependant). But there is a lot more hiding under the gums.

Horses are hypsodont animals, which means that their teeth continue to erupt through their lives. This continuous eruption, along with the wear, leads to the tooth becoming ‘shorter’ over the years.
This explains why we normally recommend a strict 6 months examination and floating on those patients that have undergone dental extractions to avoid overgrowths.

This is an image of a cheek tooth extracted from a 24 years old patient (left) and cheek tooth from a 6 years old horse (right).

If you have noticed any severe disruptions on tooth length on your horse, and it’s been a while since he/she was last examined, make sure you get him/her checked by a qualified professional 🦷
