I harvested flowers at dusk last night to welcome colleagues (and myself) back for another year today. I truly enjoy leaving a bucket on my friend's desk and seeing what she arranges. These came out beautiful! Seeing how flowers bring a smile to everyone around is always a treat, and I'm very thankful to have my wonderful colleague to help in spreading the joy around 💕

Some lovely leftovers that I finally got out of the bucket and threw together.

The lavender lisianthus are my first year growing them, and I'm experiencing a lot of browning edges. I have yet to read Farmer Bailey's recent article on this, but apparently, it's a problem with this color more than others. While I like the color, I'll not be growing it again since a high majority had this problem.

Do you grow lisianthus? If so, which varieties have you experienced brown edges with?

Some joy heading out the door to celebrate a birthday and longtime friendship 💕

I wish I had taken more photos of the dahlias in this arrangement as this variety is a favorite. The centers actually match the green zinnia color beautifully (although hard to tell in photo). I used to know the names of all my dahlias. I can't recall this one. Do you know what it might be?

Can you tell which is the volunteer "w**d" feverfew?

Call me weird, but I'll grow things that show up in beds just to see what they are. This was a fun discovery that I'm glad I let flower.

Welcome the first lisianthus, Roseanne Green. While she usually starts to appear a bit earlier in the season, she's beautiful just the same. Longest annual to grow from seed to bloom (started in November, planted in early March) and very long lasting in vase.

Did you know the first bud opens about 2 weeks earlier than the rest? Many cut the first bloom to create little vases while awaiting the full flush of amazing ruffles.

To think, I'll be starting these beauties again from seed in just a few short months for you all for next year.

Some beauty from yesterday's arrangements🌼

If you haven't guessed, I'm a closeup girl when it comes to flower photos. I also learned yesterday that my phone will wipe out backgrounds (last photo). No clue how I managed to do that, so now I need to see if I can make that happen again before searching Google 😆.

My first fama white scabiosa!

Fama scabiosa are perrenial with larger blooms than the annual varieties. I started growing these for a fellow flower farmer 2 years ago, and they have been popular at our spring sales. Boy am I glad I remembered to tuck one off to the side for myself this year as I am in love. I already have blue fama seeds to grow for next year, but now I want to grow more white. Maybe you can help me decide. Are you team fama white or blue scabiosa?

We all know the weather this season has been interesting with the heatwaves and cool downs. While we get this in the maritime northwest, to me, it feels a bit more dramatic this year. An interesting thing I've notice is how much snapdragons are affected by weather. As a cool season annual, they prefer early season planting so they can get established. Many people pull them after two good harvests in summer due to rust and very weak stems.

This year, I was getting ready to pull mine but got a little sidetracked with work projects. I've always been impressed with the stem quality of the potomac varieties in spring, but they become unusable in summer bouquets due to their extremely weak stems. With our cooler late July weather, I'm seeing stem and bloom quality almost equivalent to the first spring flush. While weather plays a significant role, so does location. It's worth experimenting with things in different spots as you may find something you were about to give up on just needed a different spot to thrive. For me, I'll definitely be growing more snapdragons that receive morning and golden hour light but get shaded midday as they have proved to be much more resilient (I also experienced this with sweetpeas) to the heat. What things have you learned in your gardening adventures that have brought pleasant results?

Sanguisorba obtusa, a type of burnet, has fun pink tassel type flowers that last forever in arrangements. While the name suggests, this is a large plant that gets over 6 ft tall and 5ft wide when established. I prefer to trim the bottom leaves off so its footprint isn't as large. Its peak bloom is July, but it does flower throughout the summer and into fall. Hummingbirds adore sitting on the top of the curls of the tassel stems. Its unique leaves add great texture in the landscape. I'm hopeful to have some available next spring so you, too, can add it to your landscape.
