It seems logical: it's hot, so shaving off all that fur must help your dog stay cool, right? For many breeds, it's actually the opposite. A double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects skin from sunburn, shaving it can leave your dog hotter and more vulnerable. ✂️

Instead, support their coat naturally: brush regularly to remove loose undercoat and improve airflow, provide shade and water, and limit activity during peak heat. When in doubt, ask your vet or a professional groomer what's right for your specific breed.

A few to know: lilies from the Lilium and Hemerocallis families are especially dangerous for cats, even brief contact with the pollen can lead to kidney failure. Sago palms are toxic to both dogs and cats, with the seeds being particularly concentrated and deadly. Tulips, oleander, and autumn crocus round out a list of plants that can cause everything from severe stomach upset to heart problems and organ failure.

The good news? There are plenty of pet-safe alternatives, roses, sunflowers, orchids, snapdragons, and Boston ferns among them. Beautiful doesn't have to mean risky. 🌸
