EXCESSIVE BARKING 👈

Loud noises cause human beings stress. This is especially true of constant, unavoidable noise, like that which is found in a busy city or heavy traffic–or in a dog that barks excessively.

Excessive barking can cause big problems for a dog’s owners. Neighbors may file noise complaints, visitors may feel put off, and the owner may feel constantly worn down from lack of sleep, struggling to make the dog stop, and simply not being able to hear. Some people might simply say “Dogs bark.” But it doesn’t have to be that way.

When a dog barks excessively, there is usually an underlying cause. It is not normal for a dog to bark at every person, animal, or leaf that passes by their window. It’s not normal for a dog to bark at strangers or as a demand to be fed. It’s not normal for dogs to bark constantly while on the leash or when the owner leaves the home for the day. That’s why we call it excessive. Most of the time, this type of barking is due to anxiety or a protective instinct. If your dog feels threatened, overwhelmed, or anxious for any reason, it may manifest itself as this type of behavioral problem. 🐕

In-home dog training does not mean that you are bound to the home. 🏠🍃

We work both in the home, as well as in outside environments. Our training program will start off in the home, but you and your pup will eventually work away from the home in real world situations as well, once your dog is ready for that! 🐶✔️

Today is National Kids and Pets Day! 🧒🐶

Along with bringing awareness to the bond shared between children and pets, National Kids and Pets Day is meant to recognize the importance of teaching children proper care and handling of animals in their home. 👍

Although training can help eliminate behavioral issues, it is important that we advocate for our pets as well and teach our children how to interact with animals in the home as well. ♥️

Medication and Behavior 💊

Medication may help with behavior issues, but it does not solely resolve those issues. Medications can help reduce anxiety, but it does not actually change the behavior. Training is the only way to teach your dog how to change those behaviors. 🐕

If you are interested in helping your dog with some behavior issues, reach out to us to learn more!

ADOPTING A NEW DOG 🐕

If you’re looking to introduce a new member into your pack, there’s a lot to think about from a training standpoint. ✔️

All dogs need a basic set of ‘manners’, such as:
recall (responding to their name)
sitting/staying (being able to trust that your dog will stay where/when you need them)
dropping or leaving objects (being able to get your dog away from objects or stimuli)
housebreaking (avoiding indoor accidents)
focus training (making sure your dog can recognize when you need them).

Having a strong obedience foundation creates a dog that will have confidence around new people or dogs and will respect and obey your training commands. This is a long and involved process, and it takes dedication to set this foundation, but these behaviors will last for years to come and will establish trust between you and your dog! 🐕‍🦺

Rescue dogs are commonly perceived as “damaged” – is that true?

Many people believe that rescue dogs end up in shelters because they are somehow “damaged.” For the most part, when someone says a rescue dog is “damaged”, they’re referring to behavior issues. Adding any dog to your home is an important decision – something you want to get right. If you get it wrong, the dog could end up back at the shelter. This is unfortunate for the dog, but can also be heartbreaking for your family.

So are rescue dogs damaged? In a word, no. Just because a dog ends up in a rescue or shelter does not automatically mean he is in some way damaged. However, the opposite is also true: not every rescue dog is physically, mentally and behaviorally healthy. This is why it’s important to choose wisely. Behavior issues aren’t limited to rescue dogs. There are many ways to acquire a dog, and all can be risky if you don’t do your homework.

Loose Leash Walking

“Heeling” means “walk nicely by my side”. The dog is next to the owner (usually on one consistent side, not switching randomly) on the walk, not galloping ahead, not pulling in front of the owner or towards stimuli or standing still refusing to budge. Not only is the dog next to the owner, but the dog is being calm and behaved. So that means no barking at other dogs, chewing on the leash, jumping on the owner, or crying anxiously for attention. The dog is by the owner’s side, and is focused on the walk itself and what the owner is doing. The owner leads the dog, not the other way around.

Heeling can be achieved even off-leash, but to begin, there must be consistent leash training. Dogs that pull on the leash, lunge at people, bark at dogs, or zig-zag in all different directions can learn to walk well and focus on the owner, while also being desensitized to problem-causing stimuli they may encounter on walks.
