Don't give up on craft shows.
From what I've witnessed and heard from other crafters (not including produce sellers and food vendors), we're all losing money on most of the shows.
If your goal is to make money at the shows, stick ONLY to shows that are established and certifiably well-attended. Don't take chances with new shows (one ALWAYS loses money at the starter shows) and don't attend shows that are well-established, but have low turnout.
This means most of your weekend will be free to utilize for other things, esp. in the summer.
But this might make you feel like you're not headed for success.
Don't fret. Your failure would be to book shows just to have shows to attend. That's a waste of money.
The only reasons to attend any show you feel isn't going to make you a decent profit would be:
1) you're supporting the cause of the show (most shows are charitable events. If you support the charity, then that would be a great reason to waste your money on the show)
2) you just want to get out of the house / be around people (you work from home and you need to socialize).
3) You are a novice and want the experience of a smaller, non-attending show to build your own resume for vending (my co-vendor did this. I think it's a great idea. It helps one figure out how to set up, the requirements, vendor-to-customer relationships building, etc.)
Otherwise, just find something else to do. Why waste a whole day vending when it's doing nothing for your brand?
Further, if you do attend a show and experience low or no sales, don't fret. It's happened to all of us . . . . frequently.
