Consistency is vital to truly having a pup potty trained. It can happen very quickly if you understand how to implement the training and be consistent. When our pups have a clear picture and understanding of what we are asking they are happy to oblige. If we are inconsistent in what that picture looks like our pups will have a hard time being successful.

Slater has not completed his vaccinations yet. This doesn’t stop trainer Melissa from making sure he is exposed to the world around him during his critical imprint stages. Missing this time with your pup can lead you to experience behavior issues with your pups such as fear, reactivity and anxiety. We see this ALL THE TIME. Have you had a pup that was afraid of the trash truck? That wouldn’t walk but instead pancaked when you began taking them out? Have you had a pup bark and snap or lunge at people and dogs at a very young age? Have you at 6 - 12 months old experienced reactivity toward cars, bikes, skateboards, people, dogs, etc.? Missing this time to properly expose your pup likely caused all of it. Pups can also be over exposed or exposed improperly which will have negative effects.
Melissa began with small trips to places that would not be overwhelming for Slater then moved into areas such as the beach. Understanding your pup and what is vital to raising them with strong nerves and confidence is 90% of the training you will do with them! Understanding what training looks like during this period in their life IS the most important training you will do with them.

Puppies can learn behaviors such as food guarding at a very young age. Many times the food guarding can begin from humans sticking their hands in the food bowl, pulling the food always from the pup when he/she is eating, and trying to assert “dominance” by taking food out of a puppies mouth. These are definitely the top reasons we see when puppies come to us with food guarding issues as young as 12 weeks old. PCOL Trainer, Melissa and Foster of this handsome little boy had a great time today. Aptitude testing, socialization and play for Slater Gator.
Slater was pulled from his mom and siblings at 2 weeks old which means he missed critical learning and development. and are working together to ensure this boy has a happy healthy successful life. ❤️

We are so excited to teach all of you everything about puppies!
But first let's introduce this little bu**er!

This is 7 week old Slater. Slater was rescued at 2 weeks old by the wonderful Orange County Pit Bull Rescue and put with our Trainer Melissa Kellow to get a best start at life. As Orange County Pit Bull Rescue does with ALL of their puppies and dogs, they jumped in full force to ensure this puppy was given high level care and a future consisting of vital life skills.

When puppies leave mum and siblings much too early they miss critical development. They miss critical nutrition and they miss critical play aspects that help them understand social skills and cues.

This boy has all hands on deck between the blessing of Orange County Pit Bull Rescue, Puppy Center of Learning and The Hounds Grounds this boy will get more than most puppies.

He was immediately given proper nutrition and supplements. He has already begun his exposure and socialization with appropriate dogs and puppies, he will be going into The Hounds Grounds Puppy Social and Enrichment program, and will be undergoing his aptitude testing.
He is already crate trained, potty trained, learning simple manners and will be starting his Position Games™️ for Obedience such as sit, down, recall, place and has started understanding of the leash.

There will be so much to come for this little guy and we can't wait to share it all with you! He is living with one of our trusted trainers and will be adoptable once basic socialization, manners and obedience are on board.
