Listen to what this trucker has to say. I don't have this type of window in my trailer - but if I did, my horse would have to have her head INSIDE with the grate and screen up. A few years ago, a horse was decapitated in Baton Rouge by an 18 wheeler. Even if that didn't happen, a huge bug or rock flying into your horse's eye could blind them. When you know better, do better!

Advice from a trucker.
If this is how you trailer your horse on the drivers side, please stop it immediately. Yesterday made the 3rd time in recent years that I’ve had to put a semi in the ditch (maintained control, not wrecked) to keep from decapitating your equestrian friend with his head 3 1/2 ft. over the center line on a narrow road. Thank you!

I do not have windows like this in my trailer but I have gone down the road and watched horses with their heads out of the window. Keep those windows UP with the screen on it. A horse was decapitated a few years ago in Baton Rouge - but just think of what else could happen...a big bug or rock hitting your horse right in the eye could blind your buddy. Read what this trucker has to say. He was watching out for someone's horse. When you know better - do better!

I spent the weekend at Ebenezer camping in site 12. Site 7 still doesn't have a pen but the rest of the sites seem just fine. Riding was great. Trails are dry for the most part. Some mud in some places...still some standing water but that is normal unless it hasn't rained like last year. Downed trees in lots of places but we had a great time. Beware of new holes...they seemed to just open up here and there!! Beware of snakes. I took one out at Rodeo Creek - he was the kind we don't want to tangle with.

I have been out on the trails and they are all pretty much fine to ride on. Some down trees that we have had to go around. Crossed Rodeo Creek with no problem. We rode there yesterday and hope to go Sunday if it isn't raining!

Y'all, this is genius. If you have that saddle that is giving you fits on turning - try this!!! I was impressed. A badly un-turned stirrup nearly did me in on a ride in Montana this past September!

If you have a round bale but no tractor - you can still move them around!! Fortunately, Honey Darling Precious has a tractor but I realize not everyone does or maybe it is in the shop being repaired and you still need to move that bale!!

I put out a round bale today. I use a Hay Hut with a Hay Chix net around it to manage the hay the best I can. I have panels around it so my horses do not have access to it 24/7. In November and December each bale lasted exactly 5 weeks. In January, during the really cold days, I left it open 24/7 so probably about a week or so. That bale lasted exactly 4 weeks. The hay I put in there today was probably the last on at $100 a bale. The remaining 5 in my hay barn I had to pay $130 each. Hay is crazy expensive and we are certainly hoping it comes down next year!! Here is hubby (well, he is blurred out...he is in the witness protection program) putting out my round bale. Rosita was standing by waiting to enter for her buffet. The Hay Hut was $1,000 when I bought it July of 2022. I know that they used to go through a round bale where I boarded them in 3 weeks. Pretty much all of my round bales have lasted close to 4 weeks. At $100 a bale, getting 25% more is $25. $25x16 months=400. So pretty much, my set up has saved me the cost of 4 round bales at last year's prices. So, it has paid 40% of the cost of the Hay Hut. This year if I can get 5 weeks out of each round bale it will have paid for itself in hay. Yay!!

Happy New Year and I hope everyone has Happy Trails for 2024!!!

I read this article and others similar to this. It has some wonderful tips on riding in unfamilar area, campgrounds, day riding areas that certainly apply to Ebenezer. Yesterday a group of very young riders came cantering down the asphalt road that leads to the lake. We were eating lunch with the horses tied to our trailers. This really set off the closest horse as running horses make quite a lot of noise on a road. It is best to never run back to camp - walk the horse so it cools it out after a ride. It helps to get the lactic acid out of their muscles so they don't tie-up which is never good. The young girls I am sure just never were told not to do that as it can upset other riders and horses. We all want to be safe in Ebenezer on the trails. Two friends of mine have been badly injured out there and it is never a good thing. Be safe - etiquette is often about the safety as this article points out. One that really matters is don't go in the lake with a tie-down on. One lady lost her horse a number of years back but doing that. Let's all be safe and watchout for each other and our horses. Y'all have a good day and Happy Trails.

Etiquette and safety are closely related. In many cases, a lack of one creates a breach of the other. Poor etiquette typically leads to unsafe situations, while good etiquette paves the trail for a safe riding experience. It is the right and responsibility of every trail user to ensure their oTrail....

Prissy and I rode from the old oil well again today. Rode 5.34 miles and kept Rosita rolling down the trails. We are certainly working on getting back in shape!!! I started the morning in a long sleeve shirt and a short sleeved one. By the time I got Rosita saddled, that long sleeved on came off!!! The weather was absolutely gorgeous - the ride was beautiful. Some eagles were making this chirpy noise that was LOUD when we got back to the trailers. Rosita gave up that hay to watch for them. We finally saw this gorgeous bald eagle above the trees!! I didn't know they made a chirpy sound!!!

Prissy Hight and I rode from the Plum Ridge area yesterday. I have ridden all of those trails on the "other side" but it had been awhile. One of the creek crossings was totally dry which I was surprised. It is generally slick, muddy and sloppy as all get-out and years ago I used to dread crossing it!! The other creek was pretty much dried up also but still had a puddle of clear water that Rosita drank out of. We had a great time. The forest was gorgeous. To get to this side, turn on Plum Ridge Road off of HWY 63 just past TM Ranch if you are going north. Go down about a mile and a half or so to the dirt road to the right. Turn there. You will go through a gate. Keep going til you see the parking lot. There are 2 entrances. I went to the second one so my trailer was positioned to haul out the first one. Yesterday was the opening of bow season. We did see a hunter and spoke with him. Be mindful of the hunters - we really didn't get into the woods until almost 10:00 AM. I didn't wear orange but I will next time. Be safe and have a great time riding!! The trail we rode is in the pink on the single trail pic. It is in yellow on the map with all the trails so you can see where were were.

I got to Ebenezer early this morning to ride with Prissy, Kathy and Tammy. I got my girl all fitted out and off we went. But, Rosita was walking slow and I decided to take her home. She wasn't limping, she wasn't even stopping but I am very cautious with her since she has been diagnosed with navicular. Her hoof boot came off coming through some mud. I got off and tried to get it back on her. It was a struggle because it was wet. Her hooves are smaller and she was trimmed 2 days ago so off that rascal came. I walked her to a washout and she walked into it so I could get back on. What a good girl she is. Thanks Kathy, Tammy and Prissy for looking out for us!

If you have good trail buddies, they are worth their weight in gold!!! Always a pleasure to ride with them. And always an adventure!! So I rode 2 miles today and Rosita seems just fine...I am just a cautious horse momma.

I was out in Ebenezer last week and this week. It was pretty dang muddy back behind the beaver pond. Kathy Owens, Prissy Hight, Tammy Simon and I went out to the sandy Trout Creek where we had lunch, over through the ReBar Creek, straight up from #9 across a trail Prissy found last year (thanks deer hunters!). We had a rodeo back there with Kathy's horse falling. Thank God she and Bailey were ok. This is just a reminder that anything can happen out in the forest that can turn into an emergency. If you don't have a Garmin, download the Gaia app for your phone. It is free. It will give coordinates in case you need to have someone come rescue you. My iPhone's compass gives coordinates so check your Android and I am pretty sure you will have one or can download one. In case of an emergency, knowing how you can get help to you or others is a great tool to have. Happy and safe trails!!

Last week I lost one of my Scoot Boots while out riding. It was muddy behind the Beaver Pond and that is where I lost it. Yesterday I got a text from Barbara Morrow telling me they found my boot out while riding!!! OMG I was so excited as they aren't cheap! She and Linda McDaniel and Theresa are up there camping and found it!! I can't thank them enough for recovering it for me! I went to pick it up today and I brought her one of the little clam bags I make and a thank you card! Thank God for trail riders that look out for each other.

This is right beside the now overgrown Beaver Pond. It certainly was holding water!!!
