HOW TO SEARCH FOR A LOST PET:
First and foremost, visit KC Pet Project when looking for a lost pet in or near Kansas City, MO. KC Pet Project's shelter is located at 7077 Elmwood, Kansas City, MO 64132, across from Lakeside Nature Center in Swope Park. We are the intake shelter for ALL of Kansas City, MO, both north and south of the river. Any pet found within Kansas City, MO city limits could be brought to our shelter -- including pets that have wandered from adjoining cities such as Gladstone, Independence, Overland Park, Kansas City KS, Raytown and Grandview. Our shelter receives animals every day and one of them could be your pet. We hold stray animals for 5 days to give owners time to find their lost pet. As the owner you are the best person to identify your pet so please come to the shelter to identify any pet you think may be yours.
If you visit our shelter and do not locate your pet, please complete a lost pet report while you are here so we can keep an eye out for your pet. Please also provide a picture of your pet (especially important for cats!!) Visit the shelter or lost/found page several times weekly on staggered days for the best results in finding your pet.
If your pet is lost after hours, you may fill out a lost pet report online at:
http://kcpetproject.org/lost-pets/
It is important, however, that you visit the shelter to search for your pet in person because your description of the animal may not match how animal control or shelter staff would describe your animal. This is especially true when determining what breed an animal is.
In addition to searching the shelter, here are other steps that may help you locate your lost pet:
- Post flyers in your neighborhood
- Notify area veterinarians and your personal veterinarian of losing your pet
- Notify the microchip company to alert them about your last pet, if chipped.
- Check Craig's list for "found" pets -- someone may have found your pet and not taken it to a shelter
- Post a "Lost Dog" message on your page, make it public, and ask people to "share"
- Check https://www.lostpetregistrykc.net/. Search found reports and place a lost report.
- Check https://www.pawboost.com. Search found reports and place a lost report.
- Visit other area animal shelters and post lost pet notices;
- Check local newspapers for "found" pet advertisements; place a lost pet ad (which is sometimes free of charge)
- Don't give up hope; we have reunited pets months, even years, after they went missing.
