πŸš£β€β™‚οΈ Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) is looking for volunteers to join the Aquatic Invasive Species Travel Team during our 2024 summer field season. Volunteers are πŸ”‘ to our efforts, and we seek dedicated and active friends to assist us this summer. Volunteers will aid LSM staff in surveying and rapid response efforts across Maine, help recruit local volunteers, and assist with workshops. AIS volunteers can expect to get on the water training, learn about native and invasive plant identification and classification, and see beautiful lakes around the State, including during our weeklong Northern Maine Initiative trip to Cross Lake. 🌊🌿

Volunteers can start assisting LSM right now in planning for our 2024 adventures. Those interested in raising awareness about AIS in Maine and having a true summer adventure learn more by emailing [email protected]. πŸ“§πŸŒž

Today the Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) identified mosquitos found in Lebanon ME tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The source mosquito specimen was discovered and collected from free-standing water located on Long Swamp Road by Brown Lane. This has not occurred since 2019. We want to encourage residents to follow proper protection guidelines outlined by the Maine CDC. The best way to protect yourself is to wear long sleeve loose clothing, use mosquito repellent, and remove any standing water (found in spare tires, flower pots, birdbaths, etc.) as these are common mosquito breeding places.

Other methods of prevention and protection are listed in the article below from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (Maine DHHS) and Maine Centers for Disease Control (Maine CDC).

We ask that residents bare with us while the Maine CDC works to investigate the matter. Our agency is in close contact with Maine CDC liaisons, and will remain on top of the situation.

Below is a referenced link for more information and an image to assist in identifying mosquito breeding grounds.
