We offer free evaluations to help you learn more about how we can help you and your dog. Micronesian Muttz Dog Training started in 2013 by Jon and Ruthie Hartley. Jon earned a BA in Sales and Marketing from the University of Providence in 2003. He began dog training professionally for Sit Means Sit-Houston in 2011. His wife, Ruthie graduated from the University of Houston with a BA in Education in

2007. She began her dog training profession as a volunteer for Sit Means Sit-Houston in 2012. Micronesian Muttz is a member of The International Association of Canine Professionals, AKC CGC Evaluators, Pet First Aid & CPR Certified and holds a Guam business license. They continue their dog training education by attending dog training workshops in the U.S. mainland, participate in dog training and behavior webinars, actively partake in private forums for professional dog trainers, and take time to read and discuss dog psychology and training literature. Jon and Ruthie live in Guam with their three year old daughter and four dogs, Halyn, Texas, Brodi and Aiya.

We've been going for walks early in the morning since it's getting hotter every day. The dogs definitely appreciate the nicer weather. They're getting older, so we've been going on shorter walks. Took advantage of today's overcast weather and had a mid-day walk. 🐾💙🐾

Meet Ruby! I've been working with her and her owners for the last two months. We're working on puppy behaviors, learning manners, proper environment exposure and covering proper leash communication. Meet Mac, 4 year old lab mix. We had our third lesson last week and training is coming along well.

Here's what we're working on:

- walking nicely on a leash 🙌
- owners are learning how to implement temporary management protocols to control aroused behaviors in the house
- learning door manners
- place command was introduced to teach boundaries

We're looking forward to seeing him again! 🐾🙌🐾

Meet Oreo! I've been working with him and his owner to help with some reactivity towards a family member if they attempt to enter their bedroom, leash reactivity on walks, confidence building, and general obedience.

We had our third lesson earlier this week and I'm happy to see so much improvement. His owner guides him with so much more confidence and intention. Oreo has improved with his behaviors at home (especially with the family member) and is learning how to walk nicely for his owner.

There are still some areas to work on, but I'm proud of the improvement in both Oreo and his owner.

I love how his owner acknowledges the importance of working on herself first in order to be a better dog owner. Something that even professional dog owners practice.

Nice job, Oreo and Mom! 💙🐾

If your dog is struggling staying calm during walks, make sure you're setting up opportunities (outside of walks) for them to practice calm behaviors.

Say hello to this cute 14 week old boy, Beorn. We had our second lesson yesterday.

Here's what we covered:

🌟 The importance of building resilience through confidence- building exercises and safe environmental exposures.

🌟 Recommendations on how to add structure and management in the house to help Beorn understand that there are rules and expectations, even as a puppy.

🌟 Introduction to the Place Command - Beorn is a smart and a motivated puppy. We want to introduce a way/place (along with the crate) to settle and decompress.

Meet Marrone! We had his initial training session last week. Here's what we covered and what we'll be working on:

Does your dog need some mental stimulation? "Toss out" your dog's food bowl and try something different. I personally love using sniff mats and puzzles for our dogs' meals.

Our dogs always seem more biologically fulfilled and mentally satisfied when we skip the food bowl.

Keep your activity short and simple! Your dog should still enjoy their meal! 💚🐕

My enrichment activities will give your dog the opportunity to exercise both their mental and physical state, while they learn to problem-solve and gain self-confidence.

I'll bring my training equipment to you and work with your dog in the comfort of your own yard. Owners can hang out and watch or they can continue with their daily work/chores and leave the activities to me.

My enrichment activities are great for those dogs who may need more than just a walk or those who lack confidence. Owners also have the option to pair their Enrichment Home Visit with a dog walk. Check out my website for more details.

Every dog has favorite activities they enjoy doing with their humans.

It's our job as their owners to figure out what activities our dogs enjoy and learn how to use them to build a stronger relationship.

Challenge yourself this weekend and find ways on how you can use your dog's favorite activity to build a stronger bond.

Here are some examples:

🐾 If your dog loves off leash walks, join them in the area they're sniffing. Show them you're interested in what their nose found.

🐾 If your dog enjoys belly rubs, try to figure out what specific areas they enjoy most. Maybe they like scratching around their ears more than belly rubs. Brodi loves massages around his ears.

🐾 If your dog loves to play tug, learn what toy they enjoy playing with most and use that one for more challenging environments.

Had a nice walk with Texas this morning. Here's a glimpse at what his walk looked like:

➡️ Practice nice manners at thresholds (house door, into and out of the suv)

➡️ Gave him a few minutes to get busy before our walk

➡️ Structure walk 25 minutes (My structure walk for Texas = no sniffing, no markin, or excessive scanning. I don't ask for a strict heel from him. I just need a nice loose leash. He does great on walks.

➡️ Wrapped up with constructive play (tug), normally 10-15 minutes.

We're home now. He's taking a nice nap. 🐾💛🐾

Hey, guys!! Happy 2023! 🎉 It's been a while! I've been taking a break from social media since November and it's been really nice! I'm excited about opening up registration for 2023 very soon! Meet Tipsy! We met with her and her owners for a coaching consultation earlier this week. She's a good and cute puppy, but even good dogs need training and structure. We discussed how and why to use the crate and went over the training marker "yes". She loves to play tug, so we wrapped up our session with a quick session of structure play and demonstrated how to use the "yes" marker. High five to the dog owners who were open minded, asking questions.and ready to incorporate the crate. 🐾🙌

Don't forget I am offering my in-person and virtual coaching sessions at a great deal from now through October. In addition, 100% proceeds go towards supplies for school classrooms in our community.

Had a phenomenal time learning from Larry Krohn this past weekend in Jacksonville, NC. It was definitely a weekend full of great take aways!

We've been following Larry Krohn's training for a while now, so we were stoked when we saw he was coming to NC. A quick 80 minute drive to Jacksonville versus a 20-24 hour flight was pretty cool!

It's always great to meet other dog trainers with the same goals - to continue improving our skills and knowledge to help dogs and their owners live their best lives together, including our own dogs!

We also got to meet Vinnie from .🤙 Both phenomenal trainers!!!

Have a sniff mat and need a new way to challenge your dog? Place the mat inside a cardboard box, any imbalanced object, tunnel, kiddy pool, or any area that is challenging for your dog and let your dog start sniffing. Choose an object that will allow your dog to win. Have fun! 🐾🤙

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a quick outdoor arm workout and some "place" work for Texas. 💚 What did our afternoon trip look like? ☀️ 15 min. loose leash walk, with lots of sniffing ☀️ 15 min. arm workout & place work for Texas ☀️ 8 min swing n fling ball game

Halyn's confidence has gone down significantly since we've moved back stateside. She's 11 years old, but still still young and so full of energy, so I'm making sure to continue working on filling in those gaps where fear is sliding in and helping her as much as she needs. Today, I'm using an A frame and K9FITbone for some confidence building exercises. A dog is never too young or too old to work on their confidence, just like humans. 💚🐾 Brodi just "placed" himself in hopes that he would get rewarded...He did! 😀 www.hartleyshounds.com

We're very proud of sweet Maisie and her owner! Maisie struggles with some of insecurities, but her owner has been putting in the work and things are falling into place nicely! Maisie is so much more confident and wonderfully curious about new experiences, not just at home but out in public! Awesome job, Maisie and Bonnie! 🌴🐕🤙

Very proud of our client and her two dogs! One of her goals was to be able to walk both dogs together, and here they are! The walk is not perfect, but progress is going well! Nice job, Linda, Yen and Yang! 🤙🌴🐕🐕

We had a great pack walk today! Thank you to those who were able to make it out. We had an amazing view too! 🤙🐕

We had a great session with Schatzi, 6 month old GSD. We worked on some counter-conditioning (to help shape new "emotions" with new experiences), covered steps to advance the place command (to help build impulse control) and introduced the feeding box (to help build focus and resilience). Schatzi and her owner did a great job with today's lesson.

Teaching Mocha (4 month old German Shepherd) how to have an "off" switch. We love teaching our clients how to play (with a purpose) with their puppies, but it's also very important that our puppies know how to simply hang within a boundary. For this, we teach the place command. With Mocha, this skill will be incredibly helpful when we need her to give grandma personal space and a break.

Teaching Mocha (4 month old German Shepherd puppy) how to settle after playtime. Her owner is learning what to say, handling skills, what not to say, how and when to reward and how to release in this short clip. Nice job, Mocha! 🐕🤙

Brodi, our Boonie dog, will often get over looked when we walk our three the dogs together. Our German Shepherd and Dutch Shepherd usually get all the attention But, Boonie dogs have some nice skills! It's up to us, the humans, to ignite their curiosity and motivation to help them reach the best version of themselves! 🐕🤙🐕

Halyn will be 10 years old next month! Today, marks 8 years since she moved to Guam! 💗🐕🇬🇺

Last puppy session with this gorgeous girl! Today, we worked on restrained recalls, luring into the heel position and discussed how to prevent jumping on guests.
