It’s that time of year! The 2024 Ingham County Youth Fair is underway. We are wishing our clients the best of luck!

Clients are pulling double duty on horses, showing in the all around and gymkhana classes.

Another Ingham County 4-H Horse Committee Twilight Show in the books. This series is fun to be able to take these horses out and see areas we need to focus on while not having the pressure of all the fancy show stuff.

Marv is proving over and over how great brained he is. I’d have 100 of him in my program! Tonight he showed one handed for the first time and did FABULOUS! Winning our pleasure and HMS class then finishing second in the ranch riding. Yup that’s right, this guy did ranch riding and had a blast! Got to have a little bit of fun while showing.

Kelsea Barcelow took the opportunity to take Blue out and about as part of fair prep and worked on Western together. These two get stronger every time they ride, and she’s figuring out this loping thing! 😂.

What else does one do beside go to a horse show on a Tuesday night! We had a great time at the Ingham County 4-H Horse Committee Twilight Show Series tonight!

Marv got off the trailer 20 minutes before his first class, no warm up, and went out w/t/c beautifully! I am very excited about the brain on this guy. He tied to the trailer like a champ.

Kelsea and Donnie got to experience their FIRST CANTER show together. If you would have asked me a year ago if this would be happening I probably would have said no. It’s been a road but it has happened!! They had a great couple classes locking in top 5 placings in those!

When the client says “I want to go show next weekend and knock the dust off”, you throw the young one in the trailer and take him to the show.

What a great learning day for this pair. This gelding is going to be really cool once he figures it all out. Watching this pair in the pen gives me the opportunity to know exactly where to dial in at on training. I can’t wait to see how this team grows within the next few months!!

The cold weather is upon us. With that being said here is our yearly reminder on temperatures and lessons. What is too cold for lessons?

Short answer: If it is below 25 degrees or the windchill/real feel is in the low teens or single digits, we don’t lesson. In order to lesson you’d spend most of the lesson warming up the horse and you’d likely be froze before we are half way through.

Long Answer:
Every barn, horseman, trainer etc has their own rule and definitions of too cold. As Lakeside is NOT a heated facility our decisions come based on human and animal comfort both.

As human comfort comes into place we look at riding gear to keep one warm. Often riding in bulky items doesn’t mix as you have to be able to feel the side of the horse, or your reins. So those heavy winter gloves you wear to play in snow does not allow you to feel your reins, moving you into a little thinner ones but those keep your hands warm so long (if it is too cold, not for long). Those snow pants are loud and bulky not allowing you to feel your horses side and know the pressure your applying, moving you into jeans and some long Johns (if it’s too cold, they don’t keep you warm long). Then we think of our parents! We are so fortunate that all of our lesson students have a parent or SO that sit with them during their lesson, they can bundle up but again, if it is too cold they will only stay warm so long specially since they aren’t moving around.

Horse comfort: there has been research that shows after a certain temp a horse can’t efficiently cool down in the summer. The same research has been done to show at a certain point horses respiratory system becomes effected when being worked in temps that are too cold. The respiratory system is designed to warm and humidify air as it enters the horses nose before it reaches their lungs. When a horse is asked to work, they take deeper breaths, when it is too cold the deeper breaths don’t have time to warm up before hitting the lungs. Damage is found around 48 hours post workout.

Wishing these two a great weekend at the State MIHA show! Kelsea needed a last minute sub in for horse for her final MIHA season, Blue stepped up to the plate. She had a 2 week crash course in learning to ride him and has had great rides since.
