Surgery was a success! Ronan is headed back home for 30 days of R&R! Then starts 60 days of working rehab. Once the surgeon got the scope into the joints he found that the cartilage itself wasn’t damaged (this was great news!) but it was the tendons/ligaments surrounding the stifle joint on each leg. A thick web of connective and scar tissues that surrounded the area had been preventing any of the medicines we were using to get through to the joint. They cleared that out so the joint can freely move and fully benefit from future injections. In addition, shreds of old damaged ligaments that were only partly attached to the bone had been getting caught in the joint from time to time which would have caused severe pain and lameness. Those shreds were removed as well. The surgeon said he had never seen tissue so thick in all his years operating. They assured me that going straight to surgery instead of trying other less invasive measures first was 100% the right choice. The key to the success of the surgery will be exercise. The vet wants Ronan to be in the best shape of his life so these muscles/tendons/ligaments never become that damaged again. So I’m counting on all of you to help me with hand walking, stretching, and of course pampering! At this time Ronan is accepting cookies, carrots, get well cards, and of course Dutch bros for his mom 😂. But seriously thank you all for the texts and well wishes. I’m not lacking in any kind of love and support. Thank you!

Ronan Update-
I know I have talked to many of you about bits and pieces of what’s been going on with Ronans health. Here is the full update. Since I bought him he has had periods on and off where he experienced some lameness and soreness in his back and hind end. Often times he would improve after a body work session or getting some high dose joint supplements. I always attributed his lack of stamina and clumsiness to the challenge of him working with his massive body. A blood test determined that he has EPM. If you Google it you will go down a rabbit hole but basically it’s a parasite they can get anytime and from anywhere. It comes from possums. It’s a neurological disease that is similar to MS in humans. Thankfully he’s not contagious to any other horses and it can be treated with a parasite medication. Since we caught it early we should ideally never see any neurological symptoms present themselves. Amidst treating this condition I have been working with the vet on his soreness. After a series of cortisone joint injections failed we sought out more diagnostic measures. X-rays and an ultrasound revealed soft tissue and joint damage in his stifles. There are many treatments available to make him pain free but surgery is the only option for long term strength and stabilization of the joint. This Thursday he will undergo a one hour procedure to clean out scar tissue, fluid, and damaged cartilage. The prognosis is optimistic! He will be on 30 days of stall rest and then 60 days of working rehab. Between this procedure and the treatment for EPM I’m hoping he will feel like a whole new horse come next summer. Thank you all for your love and support. It’s one of my greatest joys to see you love and care for my horses like I do. I will let you all know how Thursday goes!

Hello Everyone! It is bitter sweet for us to announce that whiskey is officially retired. He has worked hard during his 31 years of life, and now it’s time for him to enjoy his golden years. I know riding him has meant so much to so many of you. He is dearly loved and cared for. And because of that we plan to send him off to retirement in style. We are going to throw a party for him at the ranch. Carrot cake, pictures, and more! More details will follow but here is the date and time. Please RSVP to Kelsea.

‼️ANNOUNCEMENT‼️

I’m excited to announce that the round valley trail rides are now bookable on the website! These are going to be for existing package lesson students ONLY (subject to riders ability) and will be available on Saturdays and Sundays. This trail ride is included as apart of our 2022 Black Friday promotion. From the time we tack up to when we get back to the horse trailer it will be about three hours long. The trail goes through hills, over bridges, and sometimes through water. It’s a great way to test out all of your skills! I’m looking forward to hitting the trail with y’all this spring! ✨Let’s Talk Body Position✨

As a rider the only form of communication we have with our horse is body language. Body language is defined as the process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements. The problem becomes those unconscious movements! We are giving our horse cues without even realizing it, and then becoming frustrated when our ride isn’t going as planned. In the first picture the yellow line represents the incorrect body position. It looks like you’re just sitting in a chair. This position drives your weight down into your horses back instead of balancing yourself over their center of gravity. Imagine giving a kid a piggy back ride and then without warning he leans all his weight back! The red line in the first and second picture represents the correct position. You should be able to draw a straight line from your head to your shoulder to your hip and to your heel. In this way you become the driver and not the passenger in the saddle. Your horse will be able to listen effectively to a rider who is confident, balanced, and sitting correctly. Perfect position perfect ride!

Here’s a sneak peak of the amazing time we had at the show today! The LBHA organization once again put on a FANTASTIC schooling show. So so proud of Jude and Cinnamon!These students tried their hand at rail, trail, and halter classes. The excellent teamwork and sportsmanship resulted in lots of ribbons. I know it’s a little late but yesterday was national coaches day! And I just wanted to say I’m truly honored to be a coach to all of you who are apart of the Bradshaw Equestrian & Co. program. It’s been an incredible journey to watch you conquer your fears, lope for the first time, finally master a side pass, go on trail rides, build lasting relationships with the horses, learn what it takes to live the ranch life, understand ground work and more! I treasure each and every one of you and your milestones. I love hearing about your jobs, your kids, what shows you’re watching, your next vacation, and what your spouses think about the newfound horse obsession. The fact that you choose to make me and my horses apart of your week means so much. Being with you all is always a highlight for me! Ronan is one spoiled boy! Since his arthritis diagnosis I’ve been giving him red light treatments before and after each ride. I just love the system! Acupressure accompanied by massage is a great tool to keep our horses feeling great! It’s amazing how moderate manual pressure along certain points of the body can aid in digestion, pain relief, inflammation, and more. Beauty getting some TLC this morning! She got taping, acupressure and red light therapy. In this video you see me applying some acupressure along the bladder meridian line to relieve tension and pain in her neck. Acupressure is such a neat tool that requires only a light touch to do. Exciting news! On Friday as many of you know we had a equine body worker come and work on the horses. She specializes in massage and acupressure. She was able to assess pain, soreness, weakness, and tension in the muscles. It was such a neat and rewarding experience! And now we are bringing her vast knowledge to you! She has agreed to do a special two hour class to teach those in my lesson program how to do certain stretches and massage techniques as well as learn how your body affects your horse during your ride. She’s tailoring a class just for us! 4/8/22 3-5pm Dinner provided after class! $100 per person 8 spots available DM to join in on this incredible experience!

Why do I always say lean back? Leaning back allows for you to sit deeper into the saddle and assist your horse in engaging his hind end. Here you will see our riding instructor Jaz on her horse Kruize. The goal for this training session was to lower his head while helping him to pick up his belly to round his back out into collection. Collection is when your horse is traveling in a balanced way. Horses typically come down hard on their front feet instead of shifting their weight to be able to propel themselves with their hind. Collection helps to change that and is only achieved when the rider is able to ask for it properly. We do this by pulling our legs back so our heels are directly under our hips. Then we ask our horse to come into the bridle with our hands. Using a “1,2” method we make the bit uneven in their mouth which causes them to reach down and follow that pressure. This video is an excellent demonstration of riding a controlled and balanced horse while using soft and deliberate cues. - - - Have a question about collection?
