From cleaners, to makeup, to medications, there are a lot of common items found in our bathrooms that can pose problems for our pets. Here are some common dangers lurking under our sinks and on our counter tops as well as helpful tips to keep your pets safe:
•Keep medications safely in a secure cupboard. Do not leave on countertops or store them in plastic baggies, which are easily chewed through.
•Never medicate your pets with human products without first contacting your veterinarian.
•Always check the container before giving medication to your pet to ensure it’s the correct medication.
•Keep pets away from cleaning products. Shut them out of the room while spraying bathroom cleansers or other products.
•Close toilet lids to keep pets from drinking the water, especially if you use automatic chemical tank or bowl treatments.

Many common auto and seasonal maintenance and cleaning products can be dangerous to dogs and cats if ingested. Learn more about the products that pose the biggest threat and how to keep your pets safe:
•Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) products are extremely toxic and, unfortunately, have a sweet taste that is appealing to pets. Choose propylene glycol-based antifreeze as a safer alternative. If antifreeze is spilled, clean it up immediately or dilute it with several gallons of water.
•Keep all automotive products, such as windshield cleaner fluid or brake fluid, away from pets as they may contain methanol, a toxic alcohol similar to ethylene glycol antifreeze.

While your living room may be one of your pet’s favorite places to hand out, it can also pose dangers! Be cognizant of these common living room dangers and be sure to follow these helpful poison proofing tips:
•Learn about your plants! Some common household plants may be toxic to pets (and not people). For example, lilies are especially poisonous to cats, so quickly eliminate them from any bouquets. The ingestion of just 1-2 petals can be fatal to a cat.
•Keep home fragrance products, such as essential oil diffusers, well out of reach.
•Never spray aerosols or any heavily fragranced products around caged birds. They are especially sensitive to any airborne products.
•Be careful with batteries! Dogs enjoy chewing on batteries and battery-containing devices such as remote controls and cell phones. If ingested, they can cause serious chemical burns.
•Hang up your purse! Pets love to dig through purses and backpacks which often contain potential pet poisons such medications, ci******es or sugar-free gum with xylitol.

It’s amazing (yet scary) how many common food items in our kitchen are poisonous to our pets! Some of these food items, while safe to you may cause serious problems if ingested by our dogs and cats. Here are some common food items we recommend keeping out of reach from pets and helpful tips to keep your pets safe:
•Keep trash out of reach from pets.
•Keep cleaning products up out of pets reach.
•Do not leave food out on the table or counters where pets may have access.
•Be sure to hide any insecticide traps behind appliances or in crevices that an animal’s paw or nose can’t reach.
•If you will be having a large number of guests in the kitchen, consider having only “pet safe” foods in case anything falls to the ground.

Some common insecticides and fertilizers can be problematic for pets if ingested. Check our list of common yard and garden items to keep away from your dogs and cats and how to keep them safe while enjoying the backyard!
•Keep fertilizers in their original containers and up out of reach for pets.
•Most fertilizers will only cause mild stomach upset once placed on the yard due to pet having a difficult time being able to ingested a large about.
•Keep all insecticides in their original containers, write down the EPA Reg # and/or take a picture of both sides of the packaging.
•Consider preventing pets from being in the area of freshly planted bulbs to avoid their curiosity

Springtime is around the corner! Worms in your garden…and worms in your pet? Eeew! Hold on, let’s explain…

The worms you find in your garden mulch are not the same worms that cause heartworm disease in pets. Mosquitoes carry heartworms. And all it takes is one mosquito to bite your pet to become infected.

Here’s the good news about heartworm disease. It’s an illness that can be easy and affordable to prevent. The bad news is, if you don’t prevent it the right way, your pet is at high risk of getting sick. Heartworm disease is dangerous to your pet and some signs of the illness are tough to spot. Your pet may be acting fine, but they may have so many heartworms inside their body that it can become life threatening.

You may be thinking, “my pet stays indoors, so there’s no need for heartworm prevention.” But, heartworms are carried by mosquitoes, which get into everyone’s homes! One mosquito bite is all that’s needed to spread the disease to your furry friend.

Schedule your pet’s yearly checkup with us. We’ll do a thorough exam, including a simple heartworm test, to make sure your pet is at his/her optimum health. And we’ll talk about the best way to prevent heartworm disease, so your pet stays healthy, happy and safe!
