He worked at Stanley Consultants in Muscatine, Iowa for his entire 41-year professional career, after graduating with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering and industrial and management engineering, respectively. He worked on many projects throughout the United States, as well as in Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, and Uganda Africa. Hutmacher has a lifelong interest in natural history,
hunting, and fishing, and has hunted a wide variety of small game, with waterfowl hunting being his primary interest. He has hunted in Iowa, Illinois, the Great Lakes area near Cleveland, Ohio, the Mississippi Delta, and along Puget Sound, as well as in Canada, Argentina, and Uruguay. He currently lives in Muscatine, Iowa with his wife, Phyllis, and they have been married for 58 years and have one son, two daughters, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
