Today I’d like to introduce you to Plumas! 🤩 Plumas needed a place to go after his former people got a divorce. He is a 2 y/o umbrella cockatoo and his name means ”feathers” in Spanish, referring to those soft, bouncy, cotton-like feathers of his. 🪶
Plumas is quite the character! He’s friendly and very social, extremely curious and affectionate. He hasn’t been with us for long but gives the impression I guess many would consider to be a dream bird. 🌈 However, having a eye for behavior and psychology, I’m picking up small signs telling me to beware a little bit and not be too quick to make assumptions about Plumas being all peace and love... 🤔 He’s got a very strong personality and the wrong influence from us could make him unreliable and unstable. At the moment he’s doing great and we already love him dearly, but my gut is telling me to keep an eye on this big ball of fluff just in case. 👀
From what I gather, cockatoos are among the more challenging birds, which is right up my alley. 😘
Glad to have you with us, Plumas! 💖

The yellow little wonder next to Aurora is Luz, one of our newbies. 🌟
Luz in an 8-month-old Indian ringneck parakeet, s*x still undetermined. Originally from a breeder, Luz was purchased by a man now known to collect birds from all over, chop their wing feathers off, then sell them as ”tamed”. 😟 A young woman bought Luz from this man, indeed believing the bird was docile. Afterwards she realized the wings had been completely butchered, and 3 months later she decided she no longer had time and started looking for a new home. I found them just in time as the woman had almost given up the search, tired of hearing from questionable people looking to make a quick buck off a pretty bird. 🤑
This is such a sad story of an all too familiar fate of birds. My heart aches when I think about how unfairly Luz was treated and that it will be a long time before the feathers (hopefully) grow back. 😢
However, Luz reminds me of Celeste, a total champion and conquerer. 🏆 With a spirit like that everything should work out. So we welcome you home, dear Luz. This is a safe and loving place that will provide all the care and compassion necessary to get you back on track and keep you there. ❤️ ”Luz” means ”light” and that’s exactly how I envsion you, soaring across a sunlit sky. 💫

So this is Aire (air). 🌬 He was given to us by his previous human because he couldn’t make their relationship work and was frequently very badly bitten. Aire was also extremely noisy, making it hard for the man to operate his business, located in his home. 📣 He tried his best to gain Aire’s trust and at times it seemed like it was improving, only for there to be another biting incident that set them back even further. 🩸
The thing is, his previous human was also given Aire as late as this past summer, when his long-time owner had a stroke. He was originally bought in a pet store in the 80’s, so this guy is 40 years old and had lived with that first man all this time, up until he got sick. 😧 Another thing to note is that when his previous human got a hold of Aire, he wasn’t in great condition so he started off by cutting his chockingly long nails. Not exactly a dandy start as the bird was already pretty shaken up. 😓
We’ve had Aire for about a week now and so far so good! 🙌 He’s not noisy at all (yet anyway) and since we don’t have to move him around like in the previous place, no biting has occurred.
Aire is a mealy amazon, among the largest in their genus. 🦜 He appreciates the company of the other birds and has a pretty gentle vibe about him. Welcome home, buddy! 💚

My full-time profession is being a dog behavior specialist, and I have recently started to incorporate the macaws in my work. Since they used to live inside our house were the dogs are, they became used to them and aren’t afraid. 👍
Yesterday I was practicing with a dog that usually goes wild when she sees birds. I had Iris on my shoulder, Arco on my arm, Celeste playing with my shoelaces and Nube beside us watching, and the dog’s job was to avoid them and disengage, which she did. 👏
When the dog and I left, Arco & Iris flew to the window and watched us leave, not quite ready for the exciting visit to end. 😆😅
That’s my birds for ya! 🦜🐕
P.S: In the reflection you see their aviary taking shape. It’s going to be great!! 😍

When we first got Arco and Iris, they chose Armando to be their main human. I think I was too excited about having them so they opted for the one with less pressure involved. I soon relaxed and got over the hurt feelings, and lo and behold - they came to me! 😛 Ever since then, Iris is my girl. Arco, Nube and Celeste are pretty neutral and will go with whoever floats their boat at the moment, but Iris, she’s with me. 💙 She loves Armando too and has no problem interacting with him, but for some reason we just hit it off on another level. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Love you lots, Irisita! 🥰

This is our galah Lluvia (meaning ”rain” 🌧) in the photo we first saw of her. The ad stated there was no longer time for her and we thought she’d thrive in our flock. 🦜
Lluvia is smart, curious, socially skilled with the other birds and flies wonderfully. She’s timid towards us but time and effort will take care of that. She’s obviously a beautiful bird but most importantly she brings a nice balance to the flock and they accepted her much faster than I expected. 💖 Welcome home, pink lady! 🎀

Alas is 5 years old and had never lived with other birds before, so it’s a big adjustment for him to become part of a flock. 🐦 I feel like it’s been easier since they moved to the bird house and he seems content there. ☺️ Now they all get showered daily and get to enjoy the lovely sunlight so much more! ☀️

So the macaws moved out of their old place yesterday and the other parrots moved in today. They seem to love it already! 🥳 They have an awesome view and soon they’ll have an outdoor aviary as well. I’m so excited! 😚
We’ll be replacing the wooden rods for tree branches as soon as we find some good ones, but other than that there’s only a couple of minor details to take care of for aesthetic reasons. 🤗
The macaws are really digging their new headquarters, too, and I can’t wait for Arco to join them as soon as he’s ready. 🙏
In other words, a successful project so far! 🙌

The macaws are moving into their new crib today. It’s only a few feet away from their old one, but it’s more than twice as big. 🙌 Now that the inside of their home is starting to finish up, our new project will be their outdoors aviary. It’ll be so nice! 🤩
Our other parrots are moving into their old place, and of course they’re also getting a space outside to use as they please. ☘️ What we have to do when all the birds have left our house, is remodel our poor kitchen... 🥴
As he’s in quarantine, Arco will have to join his crew later on. At the moment I’m looking for a way to medicate him without him spitting it all out. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anybody have any ideas? 🙏

These two... 👾👾
Rayo (front) takes himself very seriously as the partner of Sol. She’s his dream lady. 🥰 He sees himself as her loyal defender, even if she’s already capable of protecting herself. She doesn’t mind his enthusiasm, though. I mean, having your own fan club of one doesn’t exactly hurt as long as he’s being respectful. 😌
On another note, Rayo’s beak is getting so much better! 🙌 It was a disaster when we got him but with a little help from me it’s looking much better now. I’m taking it step by step but it’s nice to see he’s improving so quickly. Our brave little guy. 😎

These two beautiful creatures needed a new home so we decided to take them in. We named them Adonis and Afrodita (Spanish version) and they are our third flock of chickens at the farm. 🐓 We’ll be adding a few hens to this duo as well. 🖐
In our first flock you’ll find Nirvana the rooster and his ladies; Mandala, Risa, Alegria and Griselda. 🌸 The second one consists of a rooster named Gr**go and his gals; Andorra, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Eritrea, Filipinas, Guyana and Haití. 🌍
Next time I’ll show you our phenomenal pheasants! 🦚

It makes me so happy to see Nube start playing with toys and be a little silly, because otherwise he’s this stoic, kind of serious guy. At least for now. Iris is still his chick but he’s less territorial around her at the moment, maybe because he’s learned it’s OK to relax more in our presence. He finally comes to us for treats now, so maybe that shower isn’t as far away anymore... we’ll give it a try next week. 💧

Always a dirty disaster after breakfast, but still too adorable not to cuddle with. 🥰
I have learned to avoid petting the birds anywhere else than on their head since touch in other places can actually turn them on and make them hormonal. 😳 However, it used to make Arco aggressive even if you just *happened* to brush up on his chest with your hand, so now that we’ve come this far in our mutual trust process and the opportunity presented itself, I just wanted to check what is possible nowadays. I won’t be petting him there anymore, but it’s good to know where we stand in case for some reason it would be necessary one day. ✅

Things I’ve learned about Aurora so far:
1️⃣ She’s not as picky of an eater as some of the others, and has gladly chowed down on the fresh chop since day one. 🥗
2️⃣ She’s especially keen on finding high spots to perch on. More so than the rest. 🏔
3️⃣ Alas is a little bit afraid of her and she lets that be his problem. 😆
I feel like she’s in the process of letting her hair down so to speak, and it’s intriguing because I don’t know if it’s taking her a while because everything here is new, or because it’s her first opportunity ever to safely have the space to do so. Either way, I love it! ❤️

Ah, the plans we have for these birds... 🤩💭 The macaws are getting a new crib that is currently under construction. The other parrots will then move into their old place. The house that the macaws have now is great; it’s big, it’s properly heated and the view is amazing! I love hanging out there! 🥰 However, the new place is bigger and they’ll all get a huge outdoor aviary in the spring!! 😍🙌 Can’t wait! 👏👏👏

This is Aurora (inspired by Aurora Borealis, or northern lights), a female Solomon Island Eclectus parrot. 🦜 She is 2 years old and we’re her 3rd or 4th home. Aurora has a pretty serious energy. She’s very put together but I feel like she’s really holding back on her trust. I guess she’s never gotten the chance to settle anywhere and maybe nobody ever spent enough time with her before. She’s beautiful to look at, but people tend to forget that a bird is so much more than pretty looks, so eventually they get bored. I have no way of knowing if that’s her story, though, so it could be she’s just a serious gal, it’s too early to tell. 🤷🏻‍♀️
The idea was for Alas and Aurora to have each other and they’re not fighting or anything, but they’re not close either. They hang out with the group but you rarely see just the two of them together. That’s fine, we just wanted them to have the option, but naturally they’re not obligated to be the next Sol & Rayo. 😘
I hope Aurora will relax and become more trusting with time, but there’s no rush. We love her just the same! ❤️

I love taking care of animals. It’s not always easy or fun, but making them happy and helping them enjoy life and feel content is my greatest joy. It brings so much pleasure and ease to my mind, heart and soul. 💖
On another note, I’m glad for all the friends that Sol has today. She’s like the matriarch of her flock. She’s a social lady and likes to mingle with the other birds. Sol is also a great teacher to me. I’m learning so much from her! 🤓
