Truck drivers have one of the most demanding and vital jobs in America. This job can become very dangerous, depending on the weather and road conditions. Here are some tips to staying safe while driving in hurricane season.

1. Perform an inspection before leaving the loading dock. Safety always starts with a pre-trip inspection.

2. Pay attention to the road conditions. Check the DOT frequently for route changes due to flooding.

3. Slow down and take breaks. Even with regulated driving hours, you may need more frequent breaks while driving in storms. Being well rested will help you stay alert to weather and road conditions.

4. Keep an emergency kit in your truck. Stock up on extra snacks, drinks, and paper maps of the areas you will be driving through in case you lose signal during the storm.

Bulldog’s Story

In 1959, R.D. Moseley, a cornerstone of South Carolina trucking, bought a truck with $950 out of a $1,000 loan, leaving him with $50 in working capital. A graduate of The Citadel in South Carolina, he took the idea of his alma mater’s mascot to name his new company. Thus, Bulldog Hiway Express was born, and R.D. began delivering loads throughout the state of South Carolina.

Today, more than five decades later, the company is led by Rod Moseley, Jr. and Phil Byrd, Sr., a past chairman of the American Trucking Associations. Bulldog Hiway Express handles dedicated and for-hire, open-deck operations, intermodal port deliveries and heavy hauls with loads up to 180,000 pounds. The company operates throughout the United States and Canada with an emphasis on supporting the automotive and energy sectors, including wind, solar and nuclear power.

Bulldog’s culture, especially their focus on safety and driver retention, shines through as they are ranked among the best in the industry for CSA scores and driver retention rates.
