Important Information for Cat Owners: Bird Flu and Your Cat 🐾

We know that many of you may have seen recent news about a housecat contracting the H5N1 avian influenza, and unfortunately passing away after eating raw food that contained unpasteurized milk from infected dairy cattle. While the risk of your cat contracting bird flu remains low, it’s important to stay informed.

🦠 What is H5N1? H5N1 is a strain of bird flu that can sometimes affect mammals, including cats. The most recent outbreak of bird flu has involved wild birds, with some poultry farms being affected. In March of 2024, the virus was detected in dairy cattle, and shortly after, a few cases of infected cats secondary to exposure to milk from affected cattle. There is no evidence of human to human transmission, or cat to human transmission in the current outbreak. Over 10,000 US citizens have been monitored after exposure to infected dairy or poultry herds, with 66 confirmed cases as of the time this is posted. Two isolated human cases have resulted in significant illness; One with unknown exposure (British Columbia) and one after exposure to an infected backyard poultry flock (Louisiana).

🦆Is the outbreak in our area? As of this post, no human cases have been identified outside of California, Colorado, Michigan, Texas or Louisiana. Highest risk comes to people in close contact with an infected dairy or poultry herd, with most of those exposures occurring in CA. Since 2023 there have been 10 confirmed cases in wild birds in Hampshire and Hampden County in Massachusetts, including in Canadian Geese, Mallard ducks and one Bald Eagle. There have been no reported dairy or cattle farms in our area that have tested positive for H5N1.

🐄 Why the Concern About Raw Food? Feeding raw foods always carries the risk of contamination with pathogens that can cause illness, and in more rare cases, death. This risk is present for a person or animal ingesting the raw food, or for a pet owner handling the affected products. The pet that passed away had ingested infected raw/unpasteurized milk through a commercially purchased raw food. While this case demonstrates a rare situation, it is important to continue to be cautious about feeding raw diets to our pets.

🐱 What Can You Do to Protect Your Cat?
*Use caution when feeding raw food, and avoid food made with unpasteurized milk—this is a potential source of contamination.
*Use caution if your cat may become exposed to wild birds, or animals on poultry or cattle farms — while there is no indication of affected herds in our area, infected wild birds can spread the virus to cats.
*Monitor your cat for unusual symptoms—fever, lethargy, or respiratory distress should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

If you have concerns about your cat’s diet or potential exposure to bird flu, feel free to reach out to us! Your pet’s health is our top priority, and we’re here to answer any questions you might have.

Our very own Devon DeNucce celebrated an Amazing Anniversary with us last week! Twenty years with Northampton Vet Clinic! Devon started as a receptionist back in 2004 and continued on to serve as clinic administrator for many years before moving into our Hospital Manager position. She is now our “clinic Mom”, and takes care of each and every one of us, every day.

Thank you, Devon, for being so fully committed to our NVC fam, our clients, and their pets! We’d be lost without you!
