Feeling šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„?

Packing a punch with just four ingredients, this homegrown hot sauce is the ideal way to use up your pepper harvest. Share it with your friends, gift it to your neighbors or add a kick to any meal using the recipe below:

10 ounces homegrown chili peppers
5-6 cloves garlic
1/2 cup white wine vinegar (or more, as desired - use 1 cup for a thinner sauce)
1 teaspoon salt + more to taste

Chop up the cayenne peppers along with garlic cloves and add them to a pot with the vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt.
Bring the mix to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer everything for 20 minutes.
Cool the mixture slightly, then transfer it to a food processor or blender. Process it until the sauce is nice and smooth. Adjust to taste with more salt if desired
Strain the sauce through a fine sieve if you'd like a smoother sauce, or pour it into bottles as-is for a thicker sauce.

Serious question: does using homegrown spaghetti squash as a replacement for noodles make it an ā€˜impastaā€™? šŸ

Whether youā€™re looking for a low-carb substitute or just a genius way to get some extra veggies into your kiddos diet, these spaghetti squash bowls will be love at first bite.

Start by preheating your oven to 400 F.
Next, wash the spaghetti squash and slice it in half. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and stand up the spaghetti squash halves on top of it.
Then, brush the tops of the spaghetti squash halves with olive oil. Sprinkle them with a dash of sea salt and black pepper, if desired.
Allow the squash to bake for 45 minutes, until it is softened and tender. Once it's done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool. Use a fork to separate the insides of the spaghetti squash into strands.
Top with your choice of sauce, meat and veggies.

Time to āœ‚ļø?

When you spot dying or dead leaves on your plants, itā€™s crucial to know when and what to cut to keep your plants thriving.

When to Prune:

Timing is Key: Remove dying leaves as soon as you notice them to prevent the plant from wasting energy and reduce the risk of disease.
Use Clean Tools: Always use sharp, clean scissors or pruning shears for clean cuts.

What to Cut:

Yellowing Leaves: These leaves arenā€™t contributing to the plantā€™s health anymore, so itā€™s best to remove them to focus energy on new growth.
Brown Tips: Trim off just the brown parts instead of removing the whole leaf. Shape the cut to follow the leafā€™s natural form.

What Not to Cut:

Healthy Green Leaves: These are vital for photosynthesis and the plantā€™s recovery.
New Growth: Fresh, new growth indicates that the plant is bouncing backā€”donā€™t cut it off!
Flowers and Buds: Avoid cutting off any vibrant flowers or buds unless youā€™re deadheading to encourage more blooms.

Special Cases:

Succulents & Cacti: Be cautious when pruning; only remove whatā€™s clearly dead or diseased.
Woody Plants: For shrubs and trees, avoid cutting large branches without proper knowledgeā€”incorrect pruning can harm the plantā€™s structure.

Follow these tips to keep your plants looking their best and growing strong!

Now cooking: meals that turn moments into memories. šŸ§‘ā€šŸ³

From box to kitchen, Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Kit is 100% guaranteed to grow, so you truly have nothing to lose and SO much flavor to gain. Try this recipe for a simple Mascarpone Toast below, then donā€™t forget to tag us in your homegrown creations!

Shiitake Mushrooms (1 Back to the Roots Oyster Mushroom harvest),
Shallots (2)
Butter (3 Tbsp)
Parmesan Cheese (1/2 cup)
Ground Rosemary (1/2 Tbsp)
Minced Garlic (1 Tbsp)
Salt (1/2 tsp)
Mascarpone (5 Tbsp)
Wheat Bread (5 slices)

** Recipe makes 5 servings

After growing the mushrooms, either cook them immediately or store them in the fridge in a paper bag for 1-2 days to keep them fresh. When ready to cook, trim the ends of the stems and wipe the mushrooms clean with a damp paper towel. In a medium-high heat pan or braiser, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Finely chop the shallots and add them to the pan, cooking until translucent and slightly browned. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add another tablespoon of butter, then chop the mushrooms and add them to the pan. Season evenly with salt and ground rosemary. If the pan dries out, add a splash of water. Add the last tablespoon of butter and cook for about 5 minutes until the mushrooms are well-seasoned and softened. Toast each slice of bread, then spread about 1 tablespoon of mascarpone on each slice. Top with the cooked mushrooms.

Ratatouille: popular animated flick or impressive dinner that showcases your homegrown produce?
The answer is: both!

Give it a try using the recipe below:

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
1 homegrown red bell pepper, finely chopped
1/2 of a yellow onion, finely chopped
1 cup organic tomato purƩe (or 1 (14-ounce) can crushed tomatoes)
1 large sprig of fresh thyme
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 homegrown zucchini
1 homegrown eggplant
2 yellow squash
4 Roma tomatoes
3 small Yukon Gold potatoes (optional)

Preheat the oven to 300F, then prepare the sauce.
First, combine the olive oil, garlic, onion, and bell pepper in a medium skillet over medium-low heat and cook until very soft (but not browned), about 8-10 minutes.
Next, add the tomato purƩe (or crushed tomatoes) and a thyme sprig and simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes.
Season to taste with salt and pepper and discard the thyme stem once the sauce is ready.
Reserve 2 tablespoons of the mixture and then spread rest into the bottom of an 8-inch baking dish or skillet.
Remove the ends of the vegetables and then cut them into even slices about 1/16-inch (4 mm) thick using a mandoline (or sharp knife).
In a glass or ceramic baking dish or stainless steel skillet, arrange alternating slices of the prepared vegetables over the tomato sauce, overlapping so that a bit of each piece is visible. Arrange in an alternating pattern.
Next, cover the dish with a parchment paper round (or foil) and bake for about 60 minutes. Remove the parchment paper and continue cooking uncovered for an additional 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Our Story

How we got our start?

In a college class, we learned that mushrooms could grow entirely on spent coffee grounds. After watching hours of how-to videos and turning our college apartment into a science experiment, we gave up our corporate job offers and became full-time urban mushroom farmers in Oakland, CA.

What makes our product unique?

Our indoor gardening kits were created from a passion to reconnect families to food. We want to inspire everyone to ask where their food comes from and experience the magic of growing it themselves.
