Posting hands are pretty common. By that I mean hands and forearms that rise and fall with the rise and fall of the posting trot.

The way to get rid of that habit, to have hands that are quiet, is to think about letting your elbows bend slightly and softly, down as your body lifts, up as your body sinks.

Try holding onto a neck strap of some sort that keeps your hands in one place and you will understand what your elbows must do to accommodate the steady hand position.

Posting hands are not some end of the world affliction, but we don’t see them on the better riders, so there’s that---.

Christopher Bartle, Gold Medal tips for eventers:
“Rhythm and balance trump distance. Balance with impulsion gives the horse options. I don’t say how many strides a line has to be ridden in. The horse can make that judgement. If you try to avoid a mistake, you create a mistake. This is because you interfere too much and that confuses the horse. Let the horse do its job. Slip the rein, let the nose poke and don’t count the stride. Your job is to keep the balance, rhythm and impulsion and leave the horse to get on with its job.”

A must read! Manners come from clear boundaries and are important for safety and many other reasons too.

“Manners”

You can tell much about the level of someone’s basic horsemanship by the way their horses lead.

A horse should stay next to you, not pull you or be dragged by you. A horse should respect your space, and not crowd against you, maybe step on your feet.

This is known as “having manners.” A horse that won’t lead is like a dog that jumps up onto furniture, it hasn’t been taught right from wrong.

I recently read something by a well respected western clinician. He said, “People want their horses to love them so much that they think they are being mean if they create boundaries.”

Horses weigh half a ton. They can easily hurt a puny human if they lack manners and boundaries, Heck, they can easily hurt us if they DO have manners.

People who treat horses as though they were some sort of fuzzy pets can create animals that can do a lot of damage. Creating boundaries doesn’t mean whipping and beating, but it does require that when you say “no” you mean “no.”

Standing at the mounting block, standing for the farrier, picking up its hooves, letting itself get bridled, so many basics that make the difference between a mannerly horse and one that shoves you around.

As the clinician said, “letting a horse walk all over you won’t make him love you more.”

It's going to be another hot summer. Here are some guidelines for cooling your horse .
This study was done with racehorses, so for most riding, this type of cooling isn't necessary, but the information is interesting, especially if you’re riding in the upper levels.

A recent study, conducted in Japan, compared various methods for cooling horses after exercise in hot and humid conditions. Thoroughbreds were exercised until their pulmonary artery temperature reached 108°F. The time until the pulmonary artery temperature returned to

Congratulations to Malia on Pistol and Natalie on Denali for a fabulous show at the Opava Eventing Jumper Under The Lights! Both girls rode beautifully and were excellent sportsmen. The icing on the cake is that each was in the ribbons in some very well attended classes. Thank you Darla Opava and your lovely crew for hosting!
