There are humane alternatives to declawing, and with a little patience, you can help preserve your cat's claws.

First, it’s essential for cat owners to understand that scratching is a natural behavior, and cats cannot be trained to stop entirely. Even cats who have been declawed continue to display this instinctual behavior.

Start by providing multiple scratching options throughout your home. Each cat has individual preferences for substrates, angles, and locations. Offering a variety of scratching posts and pads can cater to these unique needs.

To protect certain areas or objects, apply deterrents like double-sided sticky tape where you don’t want your cat to scratch. However, deterrents alone aren’t effective; you’ll need to provide attractive alternatives for your cat to scratch.

Encourage your cat to use the designated scratchers by rewarding them with treats, praise, or positive attention. You can also redirect them to an appropriate scratching area by incorporating the scratcher into playtime, sprinkling catnip on it, or placing it near the spot they’re drawn to scratch.

Finally, consider working with a cat trainer or behaviorist who can show you how to trim your cat’s nails and introduce cooperative care. If you’re unable to trim their nails yourself, you can schedule regular visits with a groomer or veterinarian.

This is Winter Solstice. She is approximately 1 year old, fully vetted, and a load of fun. She would be best suited as the only feline in the home but dogs are would be great company. It’s not all about cats today!

These two are certainly entertaining! Winter Solstice, 7 months, on the left and Charlie, 1 year, on the right. They are looking for their forever home. Winter is very talkative, gets along with dogs and cats but would thrive as the only cat in the home. Charlie is the curious cat, very active and loving. She would fit in with a home with many or no other animals. Please contact us if you are interested in meeting either of these beautiful felines.

In an effort to show Monique’s disposition a bit, her foster mom recorded her coming out of her room to see what everyone else was doing: notice her lack of concern for the interested dogs.
