Are you a veterinarian with a behavior case you're unsure how to diagnose or treat?
Or, are you a pet owner looking for additional support for your pet's behavior issue, and your veterinarian is interested in getting suggestions from a specialist?
We. Can. Help.
Our team of behavior vets can consult with veterinarians looking for additional support for the cases they manage in-house. Even better, we can typically schedule these with as little as 1-2 days' lead time, so you don't have to wait for help.
All the information you need to get started is available by clicking the "services" link below!
All consultations are conducted in person (at our Portland office) or virtually (for current clients) via video or phone conference, and include a written summary of information and recommendations covered, provided to both client and referring veterinarian.

It was my absolute pleasure to participate in this round table discussion about a new targeted therapy for canine parvovirus. Elanco recognizes the importance of including a behavioral perspective in this conversation. This product is a game-changer for our patients!
Despite the availability of safe and effective vaccinations, canine parvovirus remains a significant threat to unvaccinated and young dogs, often with significant morbidity and mortality.1

Huge thanks to everyone who came to Fetch Coastal in Atlantic City this week, and especially to those who showed up to learn about "top tips for stress associated conditions in cats" and how we can support them!
These vets and techs and assistants and CSCs are the ones in the thick of patient care every day, and their enthusiasm for upleveling their knowledge was palpable.
Hope to see you all again in future lectures!!!

Meet Moose and his human, Megan! Moose started seeing Dr. Krug in September 2022 and they have been working on Moose's fear in certain situations. Moose is another example of how nosework has been a therapeutic outlet and he recently earned his Nosework Level 1 title!
"As a "Covid puppy" and shelter rescue, Moose has struggled with fear-based reactivity towards strangers, which he has worked hard to improve over the course of the past year with the help of Dr. Krug. Moose first learned nosework informally over two years ago, and he absolutely loves playing "seek" as a way to burn mental and physical energy. He passed his first ORT this June, and he just earned his NW1 title, placing 7th out of 46 dogs! I am so proud of not only his nosework abilities but also of how easily he handled the trial setting and all the new people he encountered." ~Moose's human, Megan
Congratulations Megan and Moose! You are a fabulous team and we thoroughly enjoy working with you!

We are hiring for a full-time behavior technician position at Animal Behavior Clinic Portland, with an option to start onboarding immediately. This is a local position (rather than remote), so we'll need you here in Portland by the time you start working, if you're not here already. :)
We're thrilled that one of our current techs is moving into an education role (yay!!! we absolutely need more compassionate educators who are passionate about behavior!!!) and we're looking for the person who has been waiting for an opportunity just like this to become a part of ABC Portland.
I know that "team player" and "supportive culture" are buzzwords that get thrown around the employment space, but they're truly something that we lean into and embrace at ABC Portland, from start to finish. We're looking for a technician who wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves, who values a safe space within which we learn and grow together, and who wants to join a company where the contributions of every single team member help shape the trajectory of the way we operate, every single day.
If that sounds like you, send us your resume! Send it through to [email protected] and our team will forward it to the leadership team for consideration.
We're in the process of formalizing the job posting and it will be up soon, but don't hesitate to message us with any questions you have in the meantime!

Cats probably have some sense of time, but whether that's the same as humans is up to scientific debate, experts explain.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, trained, learned, coordinated, and did all the other things necessary to pull off an event like this. Can't wait to see you all again next year!!!

Hey friends! We're hiring at BOTH of our sister businesses! If you are a Customer Service expert or a Certified Dog Trainer/Behavior Consultant (or know people who are), please read on.
For those skilled in all things customer service, we have TWO positions available to choose from. Both of these positions begin remote, and will transition to remote-in-person hybrid when our facility opens this Spring. We are happy to negotiate ongoing work from home days for employees who benefit from this work style, however, both positions will require in-person work for the majority of your shifts once the facility is in full swing.

Open to Oregon/SW Washington residents within commuting distance of the PDX Metro. Our field-based trainers/BCs go out to client homes or public locations for training, but will have access to our new facility in the St. John's neighborhood at times, too. Dr. Pachel was recently featured on another amazing podcast! This time, he speaks to the hosts of the Canine Classroom Podcast, where he discusses things like the role of a veterinary behaviorist, the philosophy of LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) in training and behavior modification, plus the considerations of using Aversive's in behavior modification! It's a great listen and we'd love for you to check it out!

Meet Pudge!
This handsome boy started seeing Dr. Krug in November of 2021. Pudge has struggled with impulsivity and regulating his emotional arousal. He has come so far in the last year and one therapy that has been very helpful for him is nosework! He started taking nosework classes and despite encountering some difficulties at times (dragonflies in the summer...), Pudge has learned a new skill and has come so far he has even been able to compete at nosework trials! Pudge has earned his Nosework 1 title as well as his level 1 interior title. Pudge's human Ambra notes, "For us, I think nosework was the key to growing our relationship as well as giving him a positive outlet he needed mentally when the "normal" things we tried didn't work."
Go, Pudge, Go! We are so proud of you! ❤️❤️❤️

Happy Monday everyone! Here is an ADORABLE cooperative bath training sequence demonstrated by the amazing ”Team Oliver” ! …. Such beautiful training and collaboration happening with this team! 🐶❤️🦆
Happy dog running in snow and eating hotdogs... (#livingbestlife) = Beautiful moments with our beautiful friends. We would love to hear what this looks like for you and your pet, please share!
Check out this BEAUTIFUL start button training that team Fiona and Biggles incorporated into teaching the skill of "being in a car"... 🐶🚗⚾!!
Hemingway's hind paw nail care
HemingwayTheDog has decided that sitting is the preferred position for his pedicure. Isn't it amazing what we can continue to learn when we are in constant collaboration! What accommodations have you made for your pet for their nail care?
Cooperative care training, giving eye drops = AMAZING! Our very own, Dr. Kimberly Krug has been teaching her 2 beautiful dogs, Soso and Gatsby, to cooperate for an eye drop procedure. Can you identify the start button that tells Dr. Krug to give the eye drops?

Meet Biggles, here to remind everyone that learning IS fun. Especially when working on cooperative care training that builds autonomy and confidence in the learner. This video was taken minutes before starting a virtual training session with the Animal Behavior Clinic. Check out the text below to hear from Biggles' mom: "Biggles has generalized anxiety & fear which makes life hard. The amazing team of Dr. Krug & Julia has helped change our lives for the better. They have been so supportive & adaptive, always tailoring the training to the animals in front of them, for both Biggles & myself. Progress is ongoing but we are having so much fun moving forward & learning how Biggles processes & learns, and we are continually revising our methods so that he enjoys the process. The video shows his anticipation for his training session! "
You might remember Krista, Thor, and Sage from a previous highlight video that was demonstrating a creative strategy for introducing cooperative paw care training. Check out this NEW video to see their progress on now being able to perform the treatment needed while managing to have fun!
Weaving in cooperative care training, such as a brief ear check, to happen outside of a normal "training session" is beneficial in SO many ways! For one, it allows for exposure to the skill to happen in a different setting (generalization!), AND can also help offset the "trying to find time to train" mentality that can be so difficult in our busy busy lives. What creative solutions have you come up with to make time for training?
Cooperative Care Mission: To give oral medication. Featuring: Julia and HemingwayTheDog Status = success. Overall: SO MUCH FUN! 😁😁
Watch HemingwayTheDog stand completely still for a cooperative suture removal. He certainly deserves a party for this accomplishment!! 🎉
How does #Corneliuz communicate to Dr. Pachel that he is ready for his nail trim to begin? … Funny you should ask, check out this video to see it in action! How amazing is it that we CAN talk to dogs??
Cooperative veterinary care and handling thrives on creative approaches, and we encourage always trying to find the easiest, most accessible "in-road" for the individuals we are working with. This means that not all cooperative care looks the same, and in fact, includes infinite possibilities to tweak and adjust for every situation! In this video, check out our very own Dr. Pankratz and her kitty Kaeto beautifully demonstrating a cooperative nail trim. This technique is the result of multiple training sessions with a focus of gradually building trust and ensuring Kaeto's comfort during each session. By training with this approach, Kaeto is now able to stay relaxed and eat cheese for the entire duration of the nail trim. Fun fact: one unique aspect when working with Kaeto is that he is completely blind! You can follow his antics on Instagram: @kaeto_the_blind_one What are some creative strategies you have used to work together with your pets/patients for husbandry and veterinary care?

Who says bath time has to be a bummer... Check out our Rockstar duet Alison and Oliver working together to make bathing an enjoyable activity to do together. (Plus, isn't Oliver adorable?!...) 💛 AND! 💛 Notice the careful design for setting up the bath environment for success. Are you able to identify the creative antecedent arrangements in these video clips? We are so happy to be a part of team Oliver. See below for a testimonial from Alison: "We started working with Animal Behavior Clinic to help Oliver with his fear and anxiety. Since we made significant progress on that front with the help of Dr. Krug, I wanted to take the next step of training Oliver to be comfortable with taking baths. The last time we attempted one, he communicated that he really did not like it, so we made baths a lower priority until we were able to make more progress on helping Oliver be more comfortable and confident in his daily life. Dr. Krug recommended working with Julia, who like Dr. Krug, is amazing! Because of the training plan Julia tailored for us, Oliver looks forward to bath training, and most importantly, has fun! I had no idea it was possible for a dog to love being in a bathtub with water running, especially Oliver! The training sessions have been super enjoyable for both me and Oliver, and I’m so grateful to work with Animal Behavior Clinic. They are a smart, empathetic, and professional team, who take the time to plan and iterate based on Oliver’s needs." #Cooperativelearning #bathtime #animalbeahviorclinic #CVC
We recently got to hear of a wonderful success story from one of our clients, Joanne and her wonderful dog Nemo that she gave us permission to share with you! "Nemo and I started with the Animal Behavior Clinic in April of this year. Because of his many health issues, Nemo was becoming harder and harder to manage with veterinary care. He needed sedation for even the smallest things, like a vaccine, but even that was becoming difficult as he would often power through the sedation we tried. During our consultation with the Animal Behavior Clinic, Dr. Krug was able to identify that part of Nemo's issue was untreated pain. She referred us to a pain specialist and to Julia for training on cooperative care. Nemo's pain is now completely controlled thanks to our consult and he and I have been doing virtual training with Julia for the past six months. This past weekend I was able to give Nemo his first Adeuqan injection for his joints. He was not sedated and chose to partake in the procedure without a grumble, growl, or bite! This was a huge win for us and I cannot thank the Animal Behavior Clinic staff enough for helping me improve the relationship I have with Nemo. And for teaching him that vet care isn't so bad after all!!" Thank you again to Joanne for sharing Nemo's story of success! Great job Nemo!
