The story began with a broken combine traded for an ornery pony mare, named Bridget.

Grandpa loved horses as a teenager, but starting a family at a young age, his life initially went in a different direction. He was employed as a drill press operator and later a sheet metal worker. However, he was always drawn to horses. They got a chance to trade a piece of farm equipment for a pony mare that had a reputation for being quite difficult. He convinced his neighbors to let him keep her in their garage, as they lived in town, and he and my dad took on the task of working with the pony.

Each evening after work and school, Grandpa and Dad would try to teach Bridget ONE thing. Whether it be how to stay tied without terrorizing the neighborhood dragging a toolbox, or how to jump over a row of bicycles strategically blocking the back alley, they poured all their efforts into setting and achieving goals one by one. They even trained her to jump onto the flatbed of a rented flatbed truck, so they could haul her to some small local shows. Everyone in our family eventually got to have their own experiences with Bridget. Dadโ€™s brothers, Clint, Mark and Shawn, followed by myself and my sister, Crystal. To be honest, that pony was almost the reason I DIDNโ€™T want to pursue doing horses.

If it wasnโ€™t for my Grandpa giving all of us that interest that gravitated us to them, none of what we do and have done over the course of the last 50+ years would be possible. Many of you recognize my grandfather as a familiar face over the years at the reining shows, but to me he was so much more.

Not only did he share his love for the horses, but also his approach to anything he was doing. He always taught us to strive for perfection, no matter what the task. Grandpa was always very particular, from how he kept his yard and tools, to how he placed pencils in a drawer. Once, when I was a teenager, he let me help him weld together a metal drag (that I still have and use today). I had never welded before, and was quite proud of my first few passes, that were admittedly not pretty, but sufficient, or at least I thought soโ€ฆ Grandpa told me they would hold, but they were ugly, and proceeded to bust them all off and start over. He engrained in us that we should do work that we were proud to have as a reflection of ourselves in the future. Those welds were ok, but not perfect. And โ€œokโ€ wasnโ€™t good enough.

I was lucky enough to live next door to my Grandpa and Grandma for the first 16 years of my life and I often find myself looking back on a lot of his insights and ways of thinking. He was a brilliant man. He was the guy who knew what someone was going to do before they even knew. His wisdom fell on all of us, and I feel very lucky to have had him as an influence on who Iโ€™ve become.

"Crome" earned over 45k, starting out as a 3yr making the Int. Open Futurity finals at Congress and OKC, then going on to compete into his early teens. He earned multiple championships multiple throughout his derby years and was always so fun to show. His big personality in the barn always kept things entertaining too.
