‼️ CALLING ALL DOG LOVERS!! ‼️

The Wake County Animal Center is over capacity with over TWO HUNDRED dogs in our care - over ONE HUNDRED who are adoptable and ready for new homes.

We are, yet again, dangerously close to having to euthanize to make space for incoming dogs.

How you can help:
ADOPT - if you or anyone you know are looking to adopt, NOW IS THE TIME. Check out our adoptable dogs at pets.wake.gov

REUNITE - if you know someone whose pet is missing, make sure they are checking the adoption gallery - pets.wake.gov - multiple times per day and come check WCAC at least once every other day. As the designated stray-intake facility for the entirety of Wake County, our intake never stops. Reuniting lost pets with the families who love them is another way to help us make space.

VOLUNTEER/FOSTER - right now, our volunteer application is offline as we don't have a Volunteer Coordinator. We anticipate reopening the application by the end of this month. Bookmark wake.gov/pets/volunteer to keep track of when it's back online. You can learn more about fostering here - wake.gov/pets/foster

RESCUE - if you foster with a local rescue partner, please considering opening your home to help us avoid the euthanasia of these beautiful and deserving animals. Encourage your rescue's leadership to save a local life by transferring a dog from WCAC into their care.

DONATE - with over 200 dogs in our care, we're blowing through a lot of treats and managing a lot of bedding and supplies!

We're running extremely low on chewy treats, dog beds, blankets, sheets, and towels. Please consider donating via our Amazon Wishlist - https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2F8CXCE3QIE3K?ref_=wl_share - OR bringing/mailing your donations directly to the Animal Center.

We haven't euthanized a healthy, adoptable pet from our adoption floor to make space for incoming animals in over eight years. Help us keep that streak going! We are so fortunate to have a community who steps up to help us in these critical times. We know we can do it again! 💕

Dr. Federico had an opportunity over Memorial Day Weekend to offer a Canine First Aid Class to members of Carolina DockDogs. Dr. Federico and WCAC Team Member, Gracie Parker, both compete their WCAC alumni, Miller and Moose, in dock diving with Carolina DockDogs. It was a great opportunity to share first aid tips specific to sporting and competition dogs and, more importantly, how to be prepared in case an emergency arises.

WCAC wants to say THANK YOU to Carolina DockDogs for their donation to the animals in our care and supporting spreading the word about adopting a shelter dog!

Congratulations to Jill Aldredge, DVM!!!!

Jill got her start, and encouragement, to become a shelter veterinarian right here at the Wake County Animal Center!! We couldn't be more proud of her for completing the rigorous training to become a veterinarian and the passion to continue as a shelter veterinarian. There is a lucky shelter out there that will be gaining a wonderful shelter vet in Dr. Aldredge!!

The Rosebud Award honors 2 vet students for their exceptional commitment to enhancing the lives of sheltered and homeless animals through the study and promotion of Shelter Medicine

MEDIUM & LARGE DOG PEOPLE - WE NEED YOU!!

Event Link: https://www.facebook.com/events/863455335797511

Since April 22, 2024 - the Wake County Animal Center has taken in 334 dogs and puppies. In that same time frame, 130 were adopted thru WCAC, 56 were reunited with their owners and 41 were transferred to Rescue Partners. Unfortunately, the math doesn't work - we are still taking in more than we are placing!

So, we need to create space!! How? By bringing on FOSTERS! Currently, there are 59 dogs in foster. But there are 1.2 million people in Wake County!! If you are passionate about saving the lives of animals in Wake County, that are from Wake County - then we need YOU.

The shelter provides food, medical care and supplies for the foster dog. You provide love and space in your home while helping search for their forever home!

Requirements:
1. All current pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines.
2. You must be able to foster a medium or large breed dog over 50 pounds. This event is only for medium to large breed dog fosters!

Please fill out the following application and arrive at the Wake County Animal Center by 6pm on Wednesday night to complete an orientation, learn about the program, and possibly take home a foster Wed night or within a few days!

National Pet ID Week is here! From April 17-23, let's prioritize reviewing and enhancing our pet's identification measures. Pet ID is crucial for ensuring our furry friends have the best chance of being reunited with us if they ever get lost. Even the most well-behaved pets can find themselves in unexpected situations. The most popular and effective method of pet identification is using a microchip. If your pet isn't already microchipped, consider getting one. And if they are, ensure that your contact information is up to date with the microchip manufacturer. Let's work together to keep our beloved pets safe and secure!

We were recently made aware of a scam targeting pet owners with missing pets.

The scammer seeks out distraught pet owners who post on social media about their missing pets, finds their phone numbers and calls them after normal business hours pretending to be an employee of the Wake County Animal Center. The scammer has also manipulated the caller ID, so the phone number the fake employee is calling from shows up as the Wake County Animal Center on the targets’ phones.

The fake employee then tells the owner that the Center has their pet, but the pet needs emergency surgery. The scammer requests money sent via electronic payment systems to perform it.

The Wake County Animal Center will not ask you for payment after hours. We will never request money via Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, etc. We will not send a code to owners to confirm they are real people. We do not expect pet owners to pay us for emergency services (we do not provide emergency services).

The Center does call the owners of pets who are brought to the Center and have a microchip with contact information. However, these calls only take place during regular business hours, and staff will not ask for electronic payment of any kind.

Please do not fall victim to this scam!

It's National Dog Bite Prevention Week: April 7–13, 2024! During this important week, we focus on educating everyone about preventing dog bites and fostering safe interactions with our furry friends. Dogs may bite for various reasons, such as stress, fear, pain or protection of valuable items. Understanding their body language and respecting their boundaries is key to preventing incidents. Here are some tips to help prevent dog bites:

🐶Educate yourself and your children on how to interact safely with dogs.
🐶Provide proper supervision, especially during playtime.
🐶Socialize your dog as a puppy to various people and situations.
🐶Use zoning techniques to create safe spaces for both children and dogs.
🐶Remove your dog from stressful situations and provide a secure resting space.

Let's work together to ensure a harmonious and safe environment for everyone, including our beloved pets!

- FOSTER! If you're already a foster for the Wake County Animal Center, please come find a great dog to foster. If you are a foster for a local animal rescue partner, reach out to your rescue's leaders and ask them to pull a dog into their care for you to foster.

- RESCUE! If you are a local animal rescue partner, send a plea to your foster base and ask for support to save lives in your community.

- REHOME ON YOUR OWN! If you can no longer keep your dog, visit wake.gov/petrehome for resources on how to rehome your dog yourself.

- REUNITE LOST PETS WITH THEIR FAMILIES! If you've found someone's missing pet (a loose pet wandering on their own), visit wake.gov/pets/lost for tips on how to reunite lost pets with their families and avoid the Animal Center.

Thank you to everyone who has keep that record going by adopting, volunteering, fostering, rescuing, donating, and sharing when critical situations arise. Your support has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.
