We're excited to announce that we've reopened applications for our Volunteer Program!

Do you want to help homeless pets, but can't take home a foster right now? You can join us as a Wake County Animal Center Volunteer!

Our volunteers are an integral part of our team, and they help make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of lost or homeless animals each year. Our Volunteer Program encompasses all aspects of the Center:
๐Ÿพ Want to work directly with the animals? You can walk, cuddle, clean, train, provide enrichment, give baths, take pictures, write biographies and more!
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Do you like working with people? We always need help guiding visitors, matchmaking adoptable animals with new families, marketing, fundraising, attending off-site events and more!
๐Ÿ‘• Even if you like to work independently, you can help with data entry, housekeeping, laundry and more!

10 days โ€ฆ 3 cruelty cases of dogs left in hot cars.

What is wrong with our community? How is the constant media coverage of the overwhelming heat not reaching folks? Why is this continuing to happen?

Kudos to the community members reporting these crimes to the police and animal control!

7/6/24 - Whitney Johnson (arrested)

7/9/24 - Paul Fisher (arrested)

7/16/24 - Melanie Lewis (arrested - dog was already dead in the car)

That is almost one case every three days! This is unheard of and a trend that absolutely CANNOT continue. We are only halfway thru summer. How many more dogs need to suffer or die?

Please - leave your dog at home!!!! DO NOT leave your dog in your car!!!!

Today is National Give Something Away Day. It is the perfect day to say THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers and fosters. Every day that they foster an animal in need, volunteer to take photos, cuddle cats, walk a dog, give a bath, share a post or any of the numerous contributions they make ... they give away a piece of their heart to the animals they are helping. They give their time to the animals at the Wake County Animal Center. They give their love to the animals. They give their worry and concern to our animals. They give their hope for the ones lingering and still looking for their families. They give so much for the animals and we can't do what we do without them.

โ€ผ๏ธ Once again, THE WAKE COUNTY ANIMAL CENTER IS CRITICALLY FULL. โ€ผ๏ธ

After taking in almost 150 animals over the last three days (with only 55 adoptions, 12 reclaims, and 7 transfers to Rescue Partners), there are only two cat kennels, five dog kennels, and zero rabbit enclosures left in the building.

We have over SIX HUNDRED animals in our care (222 on the adoption floor, another 134 in the back of the Center, and an additional 279 in foster homes), taking up kennels and other life-saving spaces.

To add to this crisis, Independence Day is one of the highest-intake times of the year and we desperately need to make room for incoming animals who will escape their homes and go missing over the next sixteen days. As the ONLY animal welfare organization in Wake County who is an active partner with all five Animal Service jurisdictions, we must have space for these animals.

Since we are so dangerously close to euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals to make space, and we are begging for help with the following:

ADOPT - if you or anyone you know are looking to adopt, NOW IS THE TIME. Starting today, through Sunday, July 7th, we will be waiving the adoption fees for all adoptable animals in our building. All other adoption restrictions and policies apply. Check out our adoptable pets at pets.wake.gov

REUNITE - if you know someone whose pet is missing, make sure they are checking the adoption gallery - pets.wake.gov - multiple times per day and come check WCAC at least once every other day. As the designated stray-intake facility for the entirety of Wake County, we must have room for incoming animals. Reuniting a lost pet with the family who loves them is another way to help us make space.

FOSTER - we need foster homes! Our fabulous Foster Coordinator has scheduled two Emergency Foster Orientations.
1. Saturday, June 29th from 2pm-5pm - https://www.facebook.com/events/1013059283514346/
Wednesday, July 3rd from 6pm-9pm - https://www.facebook.com/events/3386826298285985
Please encourage anyone you know to attend.

RESCUE - if you foster with a local rescue partner, please consider opening your home to help us avoid the euthanasia of these beautiful and deserving animals. Encourage your rescue's leadership to save a local life by transferring a dog from WCAC into their care.

DONATE - with over six hundred pets in our care, we're blowing through our supplies at a record pace and are running low on everything. Please consider donating to us via our Amazon Wishlist - https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2F8CXCE3QIE3K?ref_=wl_share - OR by bringing/mailing your donations directly to the Animal Center.

We have an eight-year track record of not euthanizing a healthy, adoptable pet from our adoption floor to make space for incoming animals, but we need all the help we can get to keep that streak going. Youโ€™ve all stepped up, time and time again, to help us in these critical times and we have every confidence that youโ€™ll pull through for us, and (more importantly) our deserving pets, yet again. Thank you, our Wake County community, for all the support over these last few difficult years. Please continue to keep our pets, our fosters, our volunteers, and our staff in your thoughts.

As temperatures rise, we emphasize the importance of protecting pets from the heat.
We recommend the following tips, summarized by the acronym H.E.A.T.:

H is for Hydration: Always provide cool, fresh water for pets, adding ice cubes to help keep it cool. Ensure pets always have access to fresh water. Encourage them to drink frequently to stay hydrated.

E is for Emergency: Watch for signs such as excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, weakness or collapsing. If these symptoms occur, move the pet to a cooler area immediately and contact a veterinarian.

A is for Asphalt: Hot asphalt can burn sensitive paw pads. Walk pets on grassy or shaded areas and avoid hot surfaces during peak heat hours. Schedule walks and exercise sessions in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

T is for Transportation: Never leave pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time. Temperatures inside a car can quickly become life-threatening for pets. Even with windows cracked open, temperatures inside vehicles can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

06/18/2024

June is National Pet Preparedness Month. Make sure that you have an emergency preparedness kit for you, your family and your pets!

๐ŸฑCats - Typically, cats are only put in their crates when they are going to the vet. Some cats are difficult to catch. Make sure that you have a properly sized crate for EVERY cat in your home. If you don't have enough crates, you may not be able to evacuate all of your cats. Get your cats used to the crate so that it is not a stressful event for them to be crated and moved. Make sure all cats are microchipped. If you can't find an outdoor cat and need to evacuate, a microchip can help reunite you with your cat after the emergency.
๐ŸถDogs - Not all owners crate train their dogs. When you evacuate, your pet may be required to be crated. You can decrease your dog's stress by crate training ahead of time.
๐ŸดHorses - All horses should be able to calmly and quickly load onto a trailer. During an evacuation is NOT the time to train your horse. Your horse may be left behind if they are unable to be loaded.

โ€ผ๏ธ CALLING ALL DOG LOVERS!! โ€ผ๏ธ

The Wake County Animal Center is over capacity with over TWO HUNDRED dogs in our care - over ONE HUNDRED who are adoptable and ready for new homes.

We are, yet again, dangerously close to having to euthanize to make space for incoming dogs.

How you can help:
ADOPT - if you or anyone you know are looking to adopt, NOW IS THE TIME. Check out our adoptable dogs at pets.wake.gov

REUNITE - if you know someone whose pet is missing, make sure they are checking the adoption gallery - pets.wake.gov - multiple times per day and come check WCAC at least once every other day. As the designated stray-intake facility for the entirety of Wake County, our intake never stops. Reuniting lost pets with the families who love them is another way to help us make space.

VOLUNTEER/FOSTER - right now, our volunteer application is offline as we don't have a Volunteer Coordinator. We anticipate reopening the application by the end of this month. Bookmark wake.gov/pets/volunteer to keep track of when it's back online. You can learn more about fostering here - wake.gov/pets/foster

RESCUE - if you foster with a local rescue partner, please considering opening your home to help us avoid the euthanasia of these beautiful and deserving animals. Encourage your rescue's leadership to save a local life by transferring a dog from WCAC into their care.

DONATE - with over 200 dogs in our care, we're blowing through a lot of treats and managing a lot of bedding and supplies!

We're running extremely low on chewy treats, dog beds, blankets, sheets, and towels. Please consider donating via our Amazon Wishlist - https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2F8CXCE3QIE3K?ref_=wl_share - OR bringing/mailing your donations directly to the Animal Center.

We haven't euthanized a healthy, adoptable pet from our adoption floor to make space for incoming animals in over eight years. Help us keep that streak going! We are so fortunate to have a community who steps up to help us in these critical times. We know we can do it again! ๐Ÿ’•

Dr. Federico had an opportunity over Memorial Day Weekend to offer a Canine First Aid Class to members of Carolina DockDogs. Dr. Federico and WCAC Team Member, Gracie Parker, both compete their WCAC alumni, Miller and Moose, in dock diving with Carolina DockDogs. It was a great opportunity to share first aid tips specific to sporting and competition dogs and, more importantly, how to be prepared in case an emergency arises.

WCAC wants to say THANK YOU to Carolina DockDogs for their donation to the animals in our care and supporting spreading the word about adopting a shelter dog!

Congratulations to Jill Aldredge, DVM!!!!

Jill got her start, and encouragement, to become a shelter veterinarian right here at the Wake County Animal Center!! We couldn't be more proud of her for completing the rigorous training to become a veterinarian and the passion to continue as a shelter veterinarian. There is a lucky shelter out there that will be gaining a wonderful shelter vet in Dr. Aldredge!!

MEDIUM & LARGE DOG PEOPLE - WE NEED YOU!!

Event Link: https://www.facebook.com/events/863455335797511

Since April 22, 2024 - the Wake County Animal Center has taken in 334 dogs and puppies. In that same time frame, 130 were adopted thru WCAC, 56 were reunited with their owners and 41 were transferred to Rescue Partners. Unfortunately, the math doesn't work - we are still taking in more than we are placing!

So, we need to create space!! How? By bringing on FOSTERS! Currently, there are 59 dogs in foster. But there are 1.2 million people in Wake County!! If you are passionate about saving the lives of animals in Wake County, that are from Wake County - then we need YOU.

The shelter provides food, medical care and supplies for the foster dog. You provide love and space in your home while helping search for their forever home!

Requirements:
1. All current pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines.
2. You must be able to foster a medium or large breed dog over 50 pounds. This event is only for medium to large breed dog fosters!

Please fill out the following application and arrive at the Wake County Animal Center by 6pm on Wednesday night to complete an orientation, learn about the program, and possibly take home a foster Wed night or within a few days!

Application link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=0RKkxb86pEOMW0pTpswPL6L32hvZgtdLgVZpq4wLoUVUMzJFN1c1RFpIS1MyRVcxTFpHN1RLNDJZRS4u&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR3g7pNAKeGe-y1K_B0o7Kr_WxfvhWgB9vDlaOsnLheDlHbibTP5JvA2IBA_aem_Aeld0KGRyrEDQmkg42CzXAknT2RUdC3YJVjj_CdGfT73FF6OP9DdKuAz4t3urRC6wO3Q6vPAJBRCXmkUlDAvGXMB

What better way to honor National Rescue Dog Day throughout the whole month of May than by welcoming a new furry friend into your life from the Wake County Animal Center? To mark this special occasion, the Wake County Animal Center is launching a special adoption campaign throughout the month of May, waiving the fees for dogs that have been in the Center for more than two weeks.

The Wake County Animal Center currently has 81 dogs, three cats and two guinea pigs available for adoption. Among them, 50 dogs have been at the center for more than two weeks, making them eligible for the special adoption fee of $0. Regular adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under five years old and $15 for older cats. All adopted pets from the Wake County Animal Center are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped before going home.
