Happy muzzle up Monday! Ivy has been practicing with her muzzle for a while now, but since she is such a sensitive girl, it has been slow going. She loves sticking her snoot in the muzzle as soon as she's cued (gotta get that cheese!), but wearing it for extended periods of time is where she draws the line. Unfortunately, without the muzzle, Ivy isn't safe to take on busy trails (even at on-leash only locations; there is always at least 1 off-leash dog getting to cause a ruckus. Grrrrr). This means that it has been years since she has gotten to hike on the weekends in nice weather. We usually hit the trails during off days in less than ideal weather to avoid as many other dogs as possible. But this weekend, the excitement of a good walk was just the fix for overcoming her irritation at wearing the muzzle. We did some practice muzzling up at the trail head, and then all the sights, smells, and critters (so many ducks! Are those swimming squirrels Ivy would like to know???) distracted her completely. She didn't even realize mom hadn't taken the muzzle off after practice, and she marched her way through 2 miles of trail acting like it was any other day π₯° We still have a lot of work to do reminding her that other dogs are friends, not food. But tolerating the muzzle while we practice means that a 5,000 lb weight can come off of mom's chest, so she can focus on the training at hand, and not yelling at off-leash dog owners. Super huge shout out to and .muzzle.movement for always encouraging and promoting muzzle work. Your tips, tricks, and communities make this training so much easier and reaffirming π
In my opinion, the worst offenders tend to be board and train facilities who promise a well-trained dog in two-weeks ... charging unsuspecting owners upwards of $2,500.
July 4th is coming...

Dog crates do not have to be prisons or punishments. If you pair them with positive experiences they become dens, beds and safe spaces. The comfier the better!
Just like people, dogs do better when they are encouraged to continue learning. Telling your dog when they are constantly wrong leads to a loss of confidence and creativity that will hinder the learning process
