RDOC Dog Obedience Club is an all volunteer organization dedicated to improving the relationship between pets and people by teaching responsible dog ownership and obedience classes. We are the only dog obedience organization in Richmond area granted a license by the American Kennel Club to hold obedience trials. Founded in 1959, the club has an excellent national reputation for outstanding trainin

g. Our program offers positive, humane techniques and discourages harsh methods. Many of our club members have won awards in local, national, and international competitions. We welcome our trainees to join our club. Besides offering classes, we perform obedience demonstrations for community groups, nursing homes, and schools. Other club activities include: tattoo clinics, agility trials, obedience trials, rally trials, seminars and Canine Good Citizenship Tests. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, and we welcome visitors.

AKC Scent Work Skills - Level 2 opens for registration April 3, 7:30 a.m. .The class will start April 17 at 6 p.m. We will introduce the Buried element for Novice and Advanced levels. Skills for Container and Interior searches will include different types of containers, toy and food distractions, blowing odor, unexpected hides, and off leash searches.

Prerequisites: Prerequisite: Dogs must have completed Novice Scent Work class (or equivalent) and be able to find Birch and Anise.

Our March FCAT at Hanover-Cold Harbor Ruritan Park was a success! Thank you to all of those who came out and supported our club! Thank you to the volunteers / workers who made it possible, and a big THANK YOU to the park! Our Fun Runs, FitDog walks and Scent Work run thrus were a big success as well.

RDOC plans to hold a scent work (SW) run-through at the FCAT on Saturday and Sunday (Hanover-Cold Harbor Ruritan Park). We will do Interior, Exterior and Novice Containers. Two hides each for Interior and Exterior and one hide in Containers. One of our SW instructors will provide guidance and feedback. You can sign up at the check-in / inspection table for either 9-10 a.m. or 11 a.m.-noon, $5 for all three element runs.

This weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday is the club's FCAT at Hanover-Cold Harbor Ruritan Park in Mechanicsville, VA. Come out and watch the dogs chase the bunnies (white trash bags) in a timed 100-yard dash. We will also be having Fun Runs on Friday and Saturday after the trial, weather permitting. We will accept the first twenty dogs that sign up, $10 per run.

We will also be doing a one-mile Fit Dog walk. You do not have to participate in the FCAT to do the walk. As a special treat, we will have Big Mike's Grilln' and BBQ truck that will serve breakfast and lunch.

More info for the FITDOG walk at RDOC's FCAT on March 15-17 . . . Will be held Friday and Saturday. You do not need to participate in the FCAT to participate in the walk. Participants walk any time during the FastCat Trial, but the walk must be completed by the last run of the trial (Approx 1 p.m.) Location is Hanover-Cold Harbor Ruritan Park After they walk, they come to the ribbon table, show their tracker (proof that they walked), fill out the form, and get it signed. They can walk without pre-registration.

Come join us Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for FASTCAT, Hanover Cold Harbor Ruritan Park. Fun runs will be Friday and Saturday after the trial, weather permitting. Cost: $10 per run, per dog. We cannot predict when a trial will end. Too many factors at play. I would suggest you come at 1 p.m. or earlier to sign up. We will only run 25 dogs.

Our very own Ellen Oertel will be teaching a Level 2 Scentwork class at RDOC on Wednesdays, starting September 27, at 6 p.m.

If your dog can find birch and anise, sign up! She will start with beginner Buried and go up through Advanced, gollowed by a few weeks of crazy Container fun and cover some Interior hide concepts. She will introduce toy and food distractions with some of the searches. This class will get you prepped for AKC advanced trials!
