Pen Pals Adoption Folders
All of our Pixie's Pen Pals adopters receive a folder full of thoughtful, handwritten notes from the handlers at the correctional centers. The handlers spend weeks training and getting to know our adoptable dogs on a deep level. Their detailed notes offer guidance to help families and their new Pen Pals dog adjust to life together. Notes about a pup's training, goofy quirks, favorite things, and even areas that need more work all go into making a Pen Pals adoption a success.
You'll see that Lola's folder has lots of extra sticky notes from her handlers. She went to her forever home last week and is loving life on the outside! 💙💚
Bendito's Laser Therapy
When Bendito originally came into our program, we were told he had handling issues and would get snippy when his neck and back were touched. We originally thought this was a behavior we could work with him on, but soon realized that there was something more going on with this pup.
Bendito's inmate handlers reported that his skin would ripple and spasm when touched in certain areas. They suspected, as did we, that we needed to take him to a specialist. After seeing Dr. Courtney Belden at Balanced Veterinary Wellness, we determined that there was likely an issue with Bendito's muscles from an old injury. When he first came into the shelter before being transferred to our program, they suspected he may at one point have been hit by a car. Whatever the injury was, it is still having lasting effects and causing him pain.
Bendito will now go through laser therapy twice a week for 4 weeks to combat and hopefully heal his pain and muscular inflammation so that he can be adopted out feeling his best. We do whatever we can to help our Pen Pals pups, including treating all medical conditions-- from ear infections to parasites to surgery, we are dedicated to giving our pups the best lives possible while they are in our care.
As you can see in the video, Bendito is unbothered by the laser treatment (it's just a warm sensation to him). He is especially excited that he gets turkey snacks while it happens!
