Photo of the day! Birds & Blooms reader Amy Bragg of Anchorage, Alaska says of this photo, "Bohemian waxwings are my favorite winter birds. Often times, a few of my photographer friends and I bundle up and go out together in search of them. I look forward to their cheerful arrival again this year."

CALLING ALL INTROVERTS!

Not every dog loves playing with other dogs. That doesn't mean they have to spend all day home alone. We're rolling out a program just for those dogs that don't thrive in a typical daycare but still want/need extra mental stimulation and care during the day. Our trainers will work to customize a daily plan for your dog that they will enjoy!

Enrollment is open!

The holidays are coming!

As much as we want our dogs to be a part of the festivities, that may not be what they would enjoy most and that is OK! They don’t come pre-programmed to know how to be a good party goer. Here are some suggestions to help your dog learn to be a good party guest and enjoy the holidays:
1. Use baby gates to keep your dog away from entries of exits: Even if your dog isn’t a door dasher, there is a ton of energy and excitement around all of those comings and goings. Set them up for success by keeping them out of the middle of all that excitement and let them join the party once everyone is settled in a bit.
2. Have a safe zone away from the hustle and bustle: Even in a calm party, some dogs may find it too overwhelming, especially with new children running around. There is no reason to make them go to a party they won’t enjoy. Set up a crate or room away from the action and load it up with toys/puzzles/chews that are safe for unsupervised time. Let your dog enjoy what they enjoy at the holidays, not what you think they should enjoy.
3. Lean towards more management: The common approach is to just let the dog loose in the party, even though they may have never experienced this type of event, and hope for the best. Set your dog up to succeed. Have them on leash or gated in another room while guests are coming and going or as you are first bringing your dog into the party.
4. Help your guests help your dog: You’ve got a whole house of people who can now help you train your dog! You can put a note on your invitations explaining what you’d like help with or rules for interacting with the dog. You can keep a little basket by the door with baggies of treats so that your guests walk in loaded and ready to pay good behaviors. People love positive interactions with dogs and a little preparation sets everyone up for good experiences.

We so often pick up our puppies at 8-10 weeks of age and set off to make them the best dogs they can be. Maybe they'll be obedience champions, agility rock stars or maybe the resident bestest boy. In the rush to get to the destination, we forget we just picked this puppy up and took it away from all its ever known and plopped it into the big wide human world with human rules.

Any dog at any age can learn skills but we have a unique developmental window to build confident resilient puppies. We don't get a say in what our puppy finds sketchy and honestly it can change from day to day. It can seem irrational but it is real to them. If you build from the start that when something is "wrong" this human has the answers and makes me feel better, you've already won and you didn't even have to teach sit.

I received this message this morning concerning our Hospital page. I'm not sure what's going to happen next because I can't log into this. Please be aware. There has been no unusual activity and our post have been about veterinary medicine and animals so I have no idea where this came from and who thought it was a good idea to report US falsely.

How often do you let your dog stop on walks and observe? Observation is an important thing for us to have with our dogs, and to allow our dogs to have. For many dogs a moment to catch their breath and watch something that could be potentially scary can allow our dogs time to gain more information, which can help improve recovery.

For dog's who are young and curious, giving them a chance to watch can set you up beautifully to capture that reengagement with you! No need to bother or nag them for attention! You can simply give them a little more time and allow them to get to this heabily reinforced answer all on their own.

So, next time your dog stops to watch something... pause with them. Give them a moment to observe quietly. Be ready for your dog to reinitiate that connection so you can pay them.
