🩺 Black flies are a nuisance in Maine during the warmer months. Dogs are commonly bitten on the abdomen when they are walking around in grass. The bites often cause people to think their pet has Lyme disease. They start as a red bloody-looking dot and spread to a circle or a bullseye after several days. There are animal-safe repellents that can protect them. Check if your vet carries them.

🥑 Giving our pets snacks can be fun at times! Some healthy options include low-calorie dog food snacks, a few pieces of their own kibble, veggies (e.g., carrots, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes), fruit (e.g., berries and apples), and lean protein (e.g., chicken breast). Make sure that healthy snacks are just a treat and are not your pet’s full meal. This ensures that they are getting adequate nutrition. 🐶🐱

🥑 We all like to spoil our pets but there are many issues that obesity can lead to. Some issues include arthritis which causes painful joints, diabetes which requires lifelong insulin injections, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and even shortened life spans! If you are concerned your pet is obese, please make an appointment for an evaluation and we can help you come up with a plan to combat obesity. 🐶🐱

I am originally from Southern Maine and still live here with my husband and our two dogs. I went to YCCC for undergrad and then started working in veterinary medicine about two years ago - I love it! My favorite part of my job is seeing all of the patients and helping to facilitate them getting better. My favorite animal is a dog! Throughout this month, we will focus on weight management because obesity can occur in cats and dogs too! Obesity is when there is too much fat tissue on your pet’s body frame. We care about obesity because it can lead to other health problems, including arthritis and diabetes, making it difficult for your pet to move, manage hot days, and enjoy life! Obesity is a serious issue, but with the correct diet and enough exercise, we can usually help your pet lose weight! 🐶🐱

💉 There are many different options to help treat your pet's arthritis. Glucosamine and Omega-3 supplements are great over-the-counter options! Brands like Welactin, Dasuquin, and Rejensa are all formulated for animals. Other options at the Animal Hospital of S**o include injectable medications such as Librela for dogs and Solensia for cats, Acupuncture and Laser therapy, pain medication and management, and more! 📞 Is your pet getting older? Recognizing arthritis in our pets can sometimes be a challenge. Some signs of arthritis in your pets may mimic humans– difficulty walking, not wanting to partake in normal favorite activities as much, decreased jumping up and down, crying when joints are touched, and many more. If you are worried your pet has arthritis, consider making an appointment for evaluation, where we can also talk about treatment options. 🐶🐱

Dr. Toni O’Hara is originally from Millinocket, Maine, but now lives here in Southern Maine with her family. She attended veterinary school at the Royal Veterinary College in England, where she received her degree. 🩺 Just like us, our pets can develop arthritis as they age. While some symptoms are obvious, others can be more subtle and pets are very good at hiding them. Both cats and dogs can show signs of irritability, abnormal grooming, muscle wasting, stiffness, difficulty moving, sleepiness, lameness, reluctance to jump, not using the litterbox properly, or crying out. If you think your pet may be exhibiting these symptoms, a visit to the vet can help. They can discuss pain management options such as medications, acupuncture, laser therapy, or physical therapy. Don’t wait—schedule an appointment and help your furry friend feel their best! 🐾

🩺 Heartworm prevention is not only easy but ensures your pet does not contract a deadly disease! There are several different safe options, such as oral, topical, and even injectable. Some of the preventatives we carry at the Animal Hospital of S**o include Heartgard, Triheart, Simparica Trio, Revolution, and both Proheart 6 and Proheart 12 injections. 💉

🩺 Did you know more than a million pets in the US have heartworms? Heartworm is a large parasitic worm that lives (in its adulthood) in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected dog. Mosquitos spread the infection by biting the dog and passing the larvae from infected dogs (or other mammals) to healthy dogs. Once the number of worms increases to over 100, the animal will likely not survive. This is why we recommend giving Heartworm Preventative year-round. As we are having more breaks in our weather and rising temperatures, our pets are at higher risk. If it is caught early enough by your veterinarian, there is treatment. 🎉 Reminder that the Fourth of July is right around the corner! While fireworks can be fun and beautiful for us, they can be scary for our friends. It is suggested to keep all animals inside during the height of fireworks time so they do not accidently run off. If you think your pet would benefit from additional medical help, please contact your veterinarian!

🎉 Loud sounds can cause distress for many animals. These can include fireworks, thunderstorms, loud banging, and more. Some things you can consider trying to help keep your furry friend calm include:
* Thunder jackets for dogs;
* Pheromone sprays or diffusers (Feliway is a feline product and Adaptil is a canine product);
* A safe, quiet space in the home for them to retreat; or,
* If needed, contact your veterinarian about some options for medical management.

Hi! My name is Danica! I graduated in 2022 from the University of Maine with a degree in Animal Science and a minor in Aquaculture. I have worked in veterinary medicine for two years now. I love new kitten appointments. I am very much a cat person, so it brings me lots of joy to see kittens and cats throughout the day. My favorite animal, if you couldn’t tell reading this, is cats. 🌞 As the weather warms up, make sure to check the pavement temperature for your pet's paws. Hot pavement can cause serious damage, which is best to avoid! 🐾 A few tips:
- If you can’t hold your hand on it for 5-7 seconds without it hurting, it’s too hot for them.
- Consider a trail, grass, or area with water instead of pavement on really hot days.
- If you must walk on pavement, consider investing in some booties to help protect your pet’s paws.
- Walk your pet in the early morning or late evening when ambient temperatures tend to be cooler.

Hi! My name is Pierre Giroux and I am the owner of the Animal Hospital of S**o as well as the S**o Veterinary Urgent Care. I went to The Ohio State University for veterinary school and have been practicing veterinary medicine for over 30 years. The parts of this career that I really enjoy are performing surgery, getting to know clients and their pets, and having my own business. I grew up on a farm, and because of this my favorite animal is a horse; however, I still love dogs and cats. In my free time, I enjoy skiing, golfing, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. I look forward to caring for your pets! 🐶🐱

💉 We are excited to announce that we are now carrying Proheart 6 and Proheart 12 injections at the Animal Hospital of S**o. These are heartworm-preventative injections manufactured by Zoetis. 🌞 Heat stroke is a big danger to animals in the warmer months. The inside of a car can heat up by 20º in 10 minutes or 30º in 20 minutes, and quickly reach up to a shocking 140º! Pets can become very ill or even die from this. Animals are still at risk if they are outside so ensure your pets are safe with plenty of water, shade, and avoid midday exercise on hot days.🐾

🦷 Check out this great video explaining your pet’s dental visit to learn more during National Pet Dental Health Month! Like your 6-month dental check-up (but you can sit still and open wide), the vet assesses your pet’s eligibility for anesthesia and develops an appropriate treatment plan. Once anesthetized, your pet's teeth are cleaned, which includes scaling and polishing them, dental x-rays are taken of each tooth to evaluate root structure, and any tooth causing a problem is extracted. While thinking about your animal losing many teeth can be daunting, rest assured that animals do really well with less, or sometimes, no teeth! Animals do not need to chew their food to eat, so they do not need their teeth.
