Welcome to Our New Dog Trainer at Wasatch K9 Fitness and Training!

We are thrilled to introduce our newest team member, Kaytlyn, a passionate and dedicated dog trainer who brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our community.

With over a year of official training under her belt and almost five years of working in the dog industry, she discovered her love for training through her journey with her dog Rusty. Specializing in behavior modification, our new trainer is committed to helping dogs and their owners achieve harmony and understanding.

In her spare time, Kaytlyn enjoys dock diving with her dogs, Rusty and Timber. She has also begun exploring agility and scent work with her dog, Everest. When they’re not training, they enjoy hikes and walks with friends, and spending time in the beautiful outdoors.

Certified as a Canine Good Citizen Instructor (CGC) and a fetch judge, Kaytlyn is continually seeking to expand her knowledge and skills. She is currently pursuing certifications in fitness and detection dog trial judging.

As our business has grown, we recognized the need to expand our team to continue providing exceptional service to our clients. Kaytlyn’s addition comes at the perfect time, and we are excited about the expertise and passion she brings.

Please join us in welcoming Kaytlyn to the Wasatch K9 Fitness and Training family! We can’t wait to see the positive impact she will bring to our team and community.

Why choose for your dogs fitness needs and programs :

💪Enhanced Performance
Fit K9 athletes perform at higher levels. Strong muscles, good cardiovascular health, and optimal body weight allow these dogs to run faster, jump higher, and work longer. Whether jumping of a dock, navigating agility courses, or assisting a handler, a physically fit dog can complete tasks more efficiently and effectively.
🛡️Injury Prevention
Regular exercise strengthens muscles, ligaments, and tendons, reducing the risk of injury. Fit dogs are less likely to suffer from strains, sprains, and other common injuries that can sideline them from their duties or competitions. Conditioning programs that include strength training, agility drills, and flexibility exercises help build a resilient K9 athlete.
⚖️Weight Management
Obesity poses significant health risks for dogs, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, keeping K9 athletes agile and light on their feet. Proper diet, combined with consistent exercise, ensures these dogs stay in optimal shape and ready for any challenge.
💡Mental Stimulation
Exercise is also crucial for mental well-being. Physical activities help reduce anxiety, boredom, and behavioral problems. For working dogs, staying active keeps their minds sharp and focused, essential for performing complex tasks and following commands precisely.
✨Longevity and Quality of Life
A fit dog enjoys a longer, healthier life. Regular exercise promotes cardiovascular health, strengthens the immune system, and improves overall vitality. For K9 athletes, this means more years of active service and a happier, more fulfilling life during and after their careers.
🤝Bonding and Training
Exercise sessions provide opportunities for handlers to bond with their dogs, reinforcing commands and building trust. Time spent working out together enhances the handler-dog relationship, crucial for teamwork in high-stakes situations.

🌟 The Importance of Hydration for Sport Dogs 🌟

With the current high temperatures, keeping your sport dog hydrated is extremely important. Hydration is crucial for all dogs, but it’s especially vital for sport dogs who engage in high-intensity activities like dock diving, detection work, agility and bitework. Here’s why keeping your sport dog hydrated is so important:

💧 **Performance**: Adequate hydration helps maintain peak performance. Dehydrated muscles tire faster, reducing your dog’s stamina and agility.

💧 **Temperature Regulation**: Dogs cool down by panting, which uses a lot of water. Keeping them hydrated helps regulate their body temperature, especially during intense activities and in the heat.

💧 **Joint Health**: Hydration lubricates joints, reducing the risk of injuries and ensuring smoother movements during sports.

💧 **Recovery**: Proper hydration aids in quicker recovery post-exercise, flushing out toxins and replenishing vital fluids lost during activity.

💧 **Overall Health**: Staying hydrated supports all bodily functions, from digestion to circulation, ensuring your sport dog stays healthy and happy.

💡 **Tips for Keeping Your Sport Dog Hydrated**:

- **Frequent Water Breaks**: Offer water during breaks in both training and play.

- **Hydrating Foods**: Include raw food, wet food or water-rich fruits and veggies in their diet.

- **Electrolytes**: Consider dog-safe electrolyte solutions during prolonged activities. We love products like Super Fuel and Go Dog to help keep our dogs hydrated while competing. Products like Pedialyte also work great.

- **Watch for Signs**: Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration like excessive panting, dry gums, or lethargy.

Keeping your sport dog hydrated is key to their success and well-being, especially during these hot days! 💦

🌟 Understanding Energy vs. Drive in Dogs 🌟

🐾 **Energy**: Think of this as your pup’s overall activity level. High-energy dogs need lots of exercise and love activities like running, hiking, and playing fetch. They’re always on the go! 🏃‍♂️

🐾 **Drive**: This is all about motivation. Dogs with high drive are super focused on tasks like never giving up the hunt for a ball or getting the ball for a reward, following a scent, or performing tricks for treats. They’re determined and persistent! 🎯

Knowing the difference helps you choose the right activities and training for your dog:

✨ **High-Energy, High-Drive**: Perfect for active owners who love outdoor adventures and mental challenges. Think agility, dock diving, detection work, and bitework! 🐕

✨ **High-Energy, Low-Drive**: Great for those who love lots of exercise but prefer a more laid-back approach to training. 🐶

✨ **Low-Energy, High-Drive**: Ideal for owners who enjoy mental stimulation and training sessions without too much physical exertion. 🐩

✨ **Low-Energy, Low-Drive**: Best for a relaxed lifestyle with lower exercise and training demands. Perfect couch companions! 🐕

Match your dog’s traits to your lifestyle for a happier, healthier relationship! ❤️

✨ Dog Sports ✨
I LOVE dog sports. I had no idea when we showed up to our first dock diving event how much dog sports would change our lives.
There is just something about training a dog to help it maximize its potential both physically and mentally that sets my soul on fire. 🔥 It’s why I became a CCAS ( Certified Canine Athlete Specialist) fitness, sports and drive building are a huge part of my business. It’s truly breathtaking to watch these creatures reach their full potential.
The bond you build with your dog while training is also why I do this. The hours spent working towards a goal, the blood, sweat and tears, the joy when you get a new personal best , or high score , or complete a routine flawlessly, the adrenaline is unmatched. Looking down at your partner knowing you’re a team, nothing else matters you did this together.
Last the community. The people you meet doing dog sports become family, they cheer you on, laugh with you , celebrate your achievements and support you during the failures. They are there for the ups and downs and often both on and off the field. You build life long friendships with people you never imagined.
Dog Sports do need to be just about being the best but forming a bond with your dog. If you’ve been interested in a sport reach out to, find a trainer and try it! You never know you and your dog might just fall in love with something new.

Let’s talk about pet insurance. I am a huge advocate for pet insurance. Just like training, pet care and vet visits are part of owning a dog. I try to recommend insurance to all of our clients because I never want to see them or anyone in a position where cost prevents them from being able to care for their dog.
Putting a puppy on insurance will cost around $35/month that price will increase as the dog ages. Our 9 year old dogs are about $100/month.
$100 a month seems outrageous for a dog that never has to go to the vet until it’s not. Until you find out your dog needs TPLO surgery at the cost of $6,000/ leg or suddenly your very healthy dog has cancer and the best course of action in going to add up to about $20,000. With pet insurance treatment is a no brainer you can choose you deductible $250-$1000 and once that is met you choose what percentage the insurance covers. Usually between 50-90% reimbursement. Of course the higher deductible and lower percentage covered make your monthly premiums significantly cheaper. I prefer a $250 deductible and 80-90% coverage for my dogs that means a treatment that would cost $20,000 will only cost us about $2,250 ( 10% + deductible)
Now let’s look at that. Addis one of our dogs was recently diagnosed with cancer. We put insurance on her when we got her at 4years old, let’s say we paid $100/month from the start shes 9 now so that’s $1,200 a year for 5 years. Wow $6,000 that seems outrageous until you factor in the $20,000 in cancer treatments, the close to $10,000 last year in MRI’s and epidurals for lumbar sacral disease and the broken toe and spider bites that were also large visits . Suddenly that $6,000 is not a big deal. It also means when we noticed something was off last year cost was not factor in choosing diagnostics like an MRI to find out what is going on. It means when Sky needed TPLO it was easy to make the decision, or whenever I feel they need the vet it’s not stressful, so moral of the story get the insurance . Hopefully you never need it but you’ll be thankful when you do!

✨ Relationship ✨
“The way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected”
What is your relationship like with your dog? Do you feel you have a connection with your dog or is it a constant struggle trying to get your dog to notice you? Building a solid relationship with your dog doesn’t come easy. It takes work, it takes engagement. It takes clarity, leadership and companionship. It comes from purposeful training and play.
One of the most important things to me as a trainer is relationship. It’s about building a relationship with your dog that makes them WANT to work with you. I want my dogs pushing me to train, I want them to want to be with me , I want an equal relationship not one that’s is forced through suppression.
If you feel like your relationship with your dog could use some work or you want help with training and engagement reach out to us today. 💕

We thought it would be fun to share an update of what we’ve been doing with our personal dogs the last couple months. Janka has been working hard competing in competition obedience and Rally .
We have been running Toast and Jindra in the trails. Both went to the championship and placed. Jindra has since earned two high in trails as well. Toast is our bed bug detection k9 and jindra is our narcotics k9. Tiamat our youngest is learning the sport of PSA as well as narcotics detection.
All the dogs are of course still very active in dock diving as well with Calypso earning her DPX2 title at the last event meaning she has had 80 career jumps over 28ft!!
I like to keep this page about our client dogs but I am going to try to share updates more on our dogs as well to show the work we do with our personal dogs!
