Foxtails are sharp, pointy plants with a design for burrowing, and they can be dangerous for pets.

Here are some tips to protect your pet from foxtails:

-Avoid foxtail-prone areas
Foxtails are common in late spring, summer, and early fall, and can be found in open fields, along hiking trails, and near roadsides. If you know foxtails grow in your yard, you can remove them or hire a landscaper. When walking your dog, keep them on a short leash and avoid overgrown, grassy areas.

-Groom your pet regularly
Brush your pet, especially if they have thick, curly, or feathery fur, to remove mats and unkempt fur that could trap foxtails. You can also trim long hair around your dog's ears and between their toes.

-Check your pet for foxtails
After walks, especially in foxtail-prone areas, check your dog's entire body for foxtail seeds, including their ears, eyes, nose, mouth, ge****ls, paws, and pads. You can use tweezers to remove any foxtails that are easily accessible. However, if the foxtail is deeply embedded, or if the area is red or swollen, you should call us immediately. Don't try to remove foxtails from your dog's eyes or nostrils on your own.

-Consider protective gear
You can try using boots, a breathable mesh hood, or a commercially available vest to protect your dog. You can also use OutFox Field Guard to shield your dog's eyes, ears, and mouth from foxtail seeds.

Memorial Day Pet Safety Tips: How to Have a Safe, Stress-Free Weekend

-Protect Your Pet From the Sun

Memorial Day is the unofficial first day of summer. While everyone—dogs and humans alike—enjoys the warmer weather, it’s important to remain mindful of sunny-weather risks.

-Keep Your Pet Hydrated

With warmer weather, pets also are at risk for dehydration or heatstroke. After all, they wear a fur coat year-round, regardless of whether it’s snowing or sweltering.

-Protect Their Paws from Hot Pavement

Because the pavement can heat up during the summer months, it’s wise to check the temperature of asphalt and walkways before letting your dog walk on them.

-Keep Your Pet Calm During Fireworks and Other Loud Noises

One of the biggest hazards of a holiday with pets is all the loud, rowdy action that typically accompanies parties. Many pets become anxious, stressed and fearful around loud noises, such as crowds and fireworks.

Boulevard Pet Hospital celebrates this weekend by honoring the late but amazing Dr. M.B. Schwartz for opening the doors to Boulevard Pet Hospital in 1971 and serving the community, providing affectionate pet care and wellness, mentoring and guiding kennel staff, veterinary technicians and doctors alike.

Continuing his legacy and offering the best pet care we can; we honor Dr. Rusher for her expertise in animal medicine and small animal surgery.

Dr. Russell Kriegel and his time spent with clients and pets. Making sure all of our pet patients have the best vet care we can offer.

WORLD VETERTINARY THEME: Essential Workers

World Veterinary Day will celebrate veterinarians as essential workers in their communities. The official theme, “Veterinarians are essential health workers” honors veterinarians and all do to keep their communities safe and protected.

“This dimension of the veterinarians’ work often remains invisible to the society but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession,” “All graduated veterinarians have undergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible, for promoting public health and food safety and security.”

Veterinarians play a critical role in the prevention and control of animal diseases, and they also work towards the improvement of human health through public and private veterinary services. One of the main responsibilities of veterinarians is to identify and respond to disease outbreaks early on. By doing so, they can limit their effect on both humans and animals. Veterinarians have an essential contribution in the development and advancement of veterinary medicine, which has a crucial impact on human and animal health.

Critically endangered orangutan born via C-section at Busch Gardens. See the newborn's adorable pics

A newborn Bornean orangutan is one of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay's newest residents.

According to a press release, the Florida park's latest addition, a girl, was born on April 13 via cesarean section. The baby’s weight at the time of her birth was 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Her mother, Luna, is currently recovering from the operation.

The little one’s birth is a significant achievement for the conservation efforts of the critically endangered Bornean orangutan species. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the estimated Bornean orangutan population is approximately 104,700, and it has declined by more than 50 percent over the past six decades.

The Bornean orangutan will be reunited with her mother soon.
Jesse Adair A public relations representative for Busch Gardens Tampa Bay told TODAY.com via email that the newborn has yet to be named, and there is currently no set timeline for when that will occur.

The newborn is currently waiting to be reunited with her mother. Once Luna is in stable condition, the mother and daughter will be together again.

Springtime Safety Tips

Spring has sprung, and with the change of season, our thoughts turn to more time outside with our furry friends, long walks, longer days and activities like spring cleaning, gardening and much-needed home improvement projects. Before you embark on seasonal chores or outdoor revelry, take inventory of potential springtime hazards for your furry friends.

Safe Screening
Many pet parents welcome the breezy days of spring by opening their windows. Unfortunately, they also unknowingly put their pets at risk—especially cats, who are apt to jump or fall through unscreened windows. Be sure to install snug and sturdy screens in all of your windows.

Spring Cleaning
Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition in many households but be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Almost all cleaning products, even all natural ones, contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label directions for proper use and storage. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has a full list of poisonous household products so you can be certain of the products you’re bringing into your home.

Home Improvement 101
Products such as paints, mineral spirits and solvents can be toxic to your pets and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Also, be cautious of physical hazards, including nails, staples, insulation, blades and power tools. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a designated pet-friendly room during home improvement projects.

Let Your Garden Grow—With Care
Fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides keep our plants and lawns healthy and green, but their ingredients may be dangerous to pets. Always store these products in out-of-the-way places and follow label instructions carefully. Many popular springtime plants—including rhododendron and azaleas—are also highly toxic to pets and can prove fatal if eaten. Check out our full list—of toxic and non-toxic plants for your home and garden.

Fleas and Ticks
Pesky parasites like fleas and ticks start appearing during the spring. Make sure your pet is on year-round heartworm preventive medication and follow our guide to prepare for flea and tick season!

Ah-Ah-Achoo!
Like us, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause itching, minor sniffling and sneezing or life-threatening anaphylactic shock to insect bites and stings. If you suspect your pet has a springtime allergy, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.

ID Tags
Warmer weather means more trips to the park, longer walks and more chances for your pet to wander off. Make sure your dog or cat has a microchip for identification and wears a tag imprinted with your home address, cell phone and any other relevant contact information.

The total solar eclipse is just days away, and many Americans plan to see the rare event on Monday, April 8th, as it stretches from Texas to Maine.

For many, that could include bringing along their furry loved ones.

While some abnormal animal behavior has been recorded during eclipses of the past, don’t expect anything unusual from your pets. But you can do a few things to ensure they’ll stay safe.

Here’s what to know from Dr. Jerry Klein, the chief veterinarian of the American Kennel Club.

Their eyesight will be fine

Humans need protective eyewear to look at the eclipse, but don’t worry about getting any for your pet.

They may make for a cute photo, but they’re not necessary if they are outside with you.

Bad breath, loose teeth, swelling in the mouth or face and inflamed gums are signs of dental disease in dogs and cats, but most pets with dental disease don't stop eating, says veterinarian Sherri Dubuc. Brushing pets' teeth prevents dental disease, and dogs and cats should have their teeth professionally cleaned every year or so to prevent infections, bone decay and other diseases that shorten life spans, Dr. Dubuc says.
