Horse community please help and share this important message…
Carolyn Read of Pepper Hill Farm on Richland Road in San Marcos is looking for someone to help with her four Quarter Horses. Feeding, watering the four horses & moving one gelding to pasture, 5 days a week. Mornings at 9 a.m. and evenings at 3:30 p.m. would be ideal, but if both daily times are not possible, then evenings also would be a good help to her. Please call Carolyn at (760) 445-1184 and leave a msg., or email her at [email protected]

One of the most important ways to keep your manure pile from getting stinky is to keep it well aerated. Anaerobic conditions quickly develop in deep piles, harming the bacteria and organisms that break down the waste into dirt-like structures. Turning compost allows you to keep your compost aerated to keep these beneficial microorganisms active and healthy, which results in a pleasant, “earthy” smell.

If you don't have access to a tractor, turning the pile can be difficult. An easy way to get air to the center and avoid having to turn the pile as frequently is to insert a couple of 5- or 6-foot-long PVC pipes with holes drilled along their length. These pipes act like chimneys, drawing air into the middle of the pile. The pile will still need to be turned occasionally to move manure from the outside of the pile to the center so the heat from the composting process can kill parasites and weeds, but you won't need to do it quite as often.
