Our community, like all communities I suspect, has been heartbroken by the tragic loss of too many newly adopted dogs when they pull out of their collars or escape their new homes, only to be found dead later on. Adoption should be the beautiful beginning of a new human/pet bond, not a tragedy that will haunt the adopter and claim the life of a dog. But we can prevent this by educating all adopters about some best practices and safety guidelines when bringing a new dog home. We are working on creating some better visual materials that can be printed or shared, but in the meantime, please share this widely and most especially with anyone you know who has recently adopted or is in the market to.

1. Understand that your new dog is under some degree of stress. No matter how loving and wonderful you are, or how quickly their tail is wagging, the fact remains that EVERYTHING has changed in their world. New home, new neighborhood, new smells, new sounds, new people, new routine, new expectations and rules, new food, and possibly new animal siblings.

Wow! That's alot to ask a dog to just roll with right? So, make sure to spend the first days at home, having some quiet bonding time to get to know your dog, let them get to know you and to establish you as their familiar person and your home as their familiar place. DON'T have a welcome home party with friends and neighbors. You don't know your new dog well enough yet to know their comfort level with strangers and meeting a whole bunch of new people is not fun when you are just trying to cope with all the changes and figure out your new life. Keep it to just the immediate, live in family, order some Netflix and just give you dog a few quiet days to settle in.

My story

Hey everyone! My name is Maddy Segal and I have been pet sitting for about 11 years. I have experience with dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits, and reptiles. I am open to learning about caring for your other animals as well. I am a fast learner and LOVE animals! I worked at a doggy daycare/boarding facility for 3 years and a dog shelter for 2 years. I am very dedicated to the care of animals and I am passionate of rescuing these beautiful creatures. When I pet sit in your home I also appreciate and care for your home as well. I keep things clean and help with any gardening you ask and picking up mail/newspaper. I also make sure your home is clean and ready for you when you get back :)
