Last year we partnered with Marin Humane to train with dogs in the shelter and the volunteers working with them. We work with a variety of breeds and dogs of different ages, but of course a lot of puppies come through the shelter.
Puppies are easily overlooked by organizations because they tend to get adopted quickly. With adult dogs we are working on leash walking, obedience behaviors, building handler focus etc. What can you work on with a puppy in such a short time?
Every puppy is different and therefore get a program specific to what they need, however there are some things we do with each puppy.
1. Learning to learn : This can be simple free shaping games or teaching name/recall behavior. This teaches the puppy different ways to connect versus just coming out to expend energy.
2. Play : This is great for building relationships, curbing mouthing (which can land shelter puppies in bite quarantine) and it’s a health energy outlet. We have also found it’s a great way for potential adopters to connect with puppies.
3. Proper exposure/socialization : There is limited flexibility in terms of environment since the puppies are at the shelter. Off the bat they will meet a lot of people and hear barking dogs, so we want to make sure to minimize any stress and try to help them be confident if they aren’t already.
Our focus is to implement skills for the puppy to help in the shelter setting but also set them up for success in their forever home 🏡 #sonomacountycanine #shelterdog
Otter Pop 🦦💥
Some heeling with our little Otter Pop 🦦
The little scruff of mischief is growing up. She is a super fun dog to train, just like her dad Ruckus. Have been having a blast focusing on obedience, agility and detection work. It’s wild to see her terrier moments and then her very border collie traits come out. Such a fun little mix 🧬

We often get asked what skills to work on in puppyhood. We want to balance giving the puppy time to just be a puppy but when we see bursts of energy we can utilize that time to work on fundamental skills and muscle memory drills that will come in handy as the puppy grows up.One of those skills is rear end awareness drills. Since dogs walk on four legs it’s a relatively unnatural skill for them to move their front legs independently from their back legs. Why would we want to improve or create this skill? One of the main areas this skill will be required is in heeling drills, to create a smooth flip finish as well as left turns. Elevated foot targets are useful for this practice as the pup will need to keep their two front feet on the foot target while their rear legs can pivot around in tighter turns 🔄. Teaching this skill as a pup is easy as they are pretty flexible and adaptable at this age but it’s also a no pressure, stress free session that doesn’t require a lot of focus and concentration on their part. All they need for this session is a good appetite and you can take this skill on the go when you’re working in new environments. They will soon love seeing the foot target come out and can help with gaining focus when training in new places 🕳 #sonomacountycanine
Meet the mystery muppet! A board & train sent to us by our friends Marin Humane
This handsome guy is up for adoption!
Remember Cabernet? 🍷
She was our little COVID puppy that we raised during lockdown. Now she is growing up and we couldn’t be more proud of her. Love watching her and her human continue to progress as a team. They have so much fun together 💞 #puppyraisingchronicles #sonomacountycanine
Board & Train @tifa_thecanecorso showing off some of her new skills 🐾
Tifa is a super sweet girl and is extremely social, which made it challenging to work around people and dogs. She wanted to say hi and play with everyone. During her board & train we worked on building engagement(handler focus) and making her into an active versus reactive dog. Meaning, a dog that comes out and pushes the handler with focus versus a dog that you constantly have to prompt to get attention from.
You can see in the video, we aren’t telling her to pay attention to us. That is being offered, allowing us to work on her other skills like place bed. Can’t wait to start the transfer of these skills to her owners at pick up! #sonomacountycanine
This little fried chicken is learning things 🍗
Jumping onto that place bed like it’s a fresh waffle 🧇 #sonomacountycanine #puppyraisingchronicles
Some fun on a new field with Waffle 🇧🇪
A few weeks ago we got a chance to spent time with @ferdosta on this lovely field. What a wonderful few days of ringsport! Dosta worked Mimosa for years so it was excited to see him work Waffle for the first time. Can’t wait for the next seminar and to continue this journey with him 🧇 #belgianwafflinois #sonomacountycanine #puppyraisingchronicles
